Is this job a scam?

It threw me off when I asked him for his name on the phone he wouldn't tell me and he said i wouldn't have to road test theres other guys with experience who applied but he thinks he's gonna go with me the first thought in my head was WOW NICE GUY!when I hung up I wasn't as nervous and started thinking more why wouldn't he tell me his name and why wouod he chose me over the experienced guys who applied and said there on board for the same 22 an hr but your right im sure its hard starting any business the burger king he wants to meet at is in the most dangerous place in ohio as well he wouldn't change the location for nothing if I had someone to go with me i would but I'm gonna take the ladys advice on this one!but I absolutely understand where you coming from

I'm sorry, they have trucks but no office?? RUN the other direction as fast as you can!!

Laura

I strongly disagree with you. My wife works for a small company of about a dozen trucks and I'm good friends with the owner. Its a 2 person operation (my wife and him) and it took him a while to get an office when he was first starting out. The starting costs are massive especially if you're renting space just for paperwork. It can sometimes be best to save the money and just use a room in your house when starting out. Its not unusual at all. Think about how many small businesses started in their garage and eventually moved to an industrial space. Why would this throw you off?

Back to the question, to legitimize this job opportunity and ensure he isn't scamming you, ask him for his company DOT/MC #. Use that information to do some research into them. You'll learn all you'll need to know with that information and some research.

Starting out is really really hard in this industry from his position. Yes he will cut corners in an attempt to keep his head above water.

Is this job a scam?

Yeah about 3 months I have had a hard time with being new and covid even garbage company's wont take me im trying to stay local for my kids and wife but I'm learning real quick we may have to sacrifice and do regional a while.......the area he wants to meet is east cleveland area which is pretty scary itself.i sure appreciate 🙏 the tips and if you know anyone local that might be willing to train a rookie please let me know

double-quotes-start.png

So I applied on indeed to a job in cleveland called j&k express local 22 an hr so the guy called me I said i just got my cdo no experience hes like thats fine we are new only have a few trucks didnt give me his name had me fill out an app I left out my social anyway he called again and its an 888 number then says he wants to meet at a burger king in Cleveland there working on getting there facility together my question to you experienced guys is does this sound To good to be true?is it a scam?

double-quotes-end.png

Yeah, that's definitely a 'no go' IMHO. Cleveland SURE DOES have some shady areas; my hubby delivers in many of the boroughs there.

I looked them up on SAFER web; they don't even SHOW a CLE location...but a bunch of others....all a bunch of LLC's. Closest one is in CMH (Columbus) with only 2 power units, and a DOT/MC# established in December 2019. Nothing I'd be interested in AT ALL, being a fellow buckeye, and married to a trucker, LoL~!

You've had your CDL for what, 3 months now? Have you driven at all yet? You need to get going, Michael ~! Are you trying to stay away from OTR, or... what? Just wondering. As I recall you went to weekend school, correct? There are many opportunities out of Cleveland for many amazing carriers. We've got a lot of buddies up your way that drive up there.

Best wishes on your job search, sir!

Road test tommorow should I try to sleep?

Your right I'm still laying here trying to conk out If I stay up itll be about 26 hours awake at test time

You need to sleep. I'm not sure how long you've already been awake but I've heard that after 24 hours being awake your decision making is similiar to being intoxicated. You will be unable to think clearly especially under stress. Loading up on caffeine will only make it worse and have you jittery. You know where the curb is and how to avoid it. Focusing so deeply on this curb is going to cause you to fail something like shifting because you're too worried about it. They don't expect you to be perfect, you just need to show them you know how to safely handle a rig.

Road test tommorow should I try to sleep?

Thanks brother!

Try to get some sleep. Take your time on the turns and watch your tandems. Don’t let a small mishap on your last test destroy your confidence. You got this

How to keep from stalling

Hey guys weird question I've been doing weekend training at community college for a few months finally test not this tuesday but next instructors have told me I'm the best driver in class I feel pretty confident on pre trip maneuvers and definetly on road EXCEPT!we have a 10 speed 2014 cascadia and they want us to start in 3d gear instead of 1st probably so ppl dont throw it on reverse going to second they always say easssssse off the clutch until you feel it pull a little for some reason it always sound like its gonna bog down or stall unless I immediately give it gas but the instructor was like your gonna burn the clutch so I eased off and bam it stalled I can shift piece of cake how do I fix this before I test?it dosent big like that when were doing maneuvers is it because were starting in a higher gear?thanks fellas see yall on the road shortly god bless

Weekend training

Thank you I have my test the week before Christmas

It might help you to write out the pre trip several times on paper. Write it in the same order every time. It helped me learn the pre trip before I ever even saw a truck.

For backing, I didn't get as much practice as I thought I needed while in school. When it was time to test I figured I had a 50/50 chance at passing. I got lucky and passed.

I passed pre trip and backing first try. Driving (which I was very confident about) took me two tries. I hopped a curb on my first turn and that was it for my first attempt.

I dont know of many, if any, people who are totally confident going into their CDL tests. Try to keep a positive attitude.

Test day

Good luck brother!

Yep me too tomorrow (Thursday 25th) Finally going to DMV in Fontana to test. Driving is more on my mind, since we didn't get too much road time! Owner "thinks" 3-4 times out is enough (30-45 minutes each??)lol Did good freeway going down and back up I-15s Cajon Pass, I only light tapped brake 3 times keep my safe space good. The double clutching kicking my butt easier to float em haha

Got air brakes and in-cab down pretty much, all outside inspections easiest thing (having been a diesel mech before) Gunna be cool calm relaxed, andgive it my best shot. May Trucking is on hold once I got the license in hand ! past 2 days been nailing the parallels right or left, ran bout 15 each side today to nail em down better ! our test alley dock slot is bit smaller, and the box is 2 foot deep not 3 like DMVs so we get it down at school, DMV's should be bit easier......

Off to bed,,, I test 7 am when dmv opens, hopefully examiners in a good mood,, whoever I get,, not all hot, sweaty n pizzed off because its late in the day hahaha. Think they (dmv) have gotten lil fed up with this school sending down "testers" , not drivers..........

Test day

Thank you ive read alot of your posts and hope to get an easy going trainer like you🤞

Don't sweat it Larry, you'll get it.

You have to pass one section before you can move on to the next. So you must pass pretrip before you can move on to the backing tests. Then you must pass the backing before you can move on to the road test.

Test day

I sure appreciate ya!

double-quotes-start.png

Hey guys starting weekend class in October during test day say I pass pre trip fail backing pass road test.would I have to do all 3 over again or just backing?also how nervous were y'all on text day?how many of y'all passed first try how many did it take multipule attempts?much obliged!

double-quotes-end.png

I passed my first try. The problem with weekend classes is that there isn't enough repetition for it stick, in my opinion.

From what I understand you fail a part of the test and you're done. First is pretrip, then it's skills then driving. If you fail pretrip you don't go on to skills. If you fail skills you're not going out on the road.

Good luck good-luck.gif
