Here we are and its already day 3! Day 1 consisted of paperwork, the physical capability test, and some introductory videos.
Day 2 - Company safety briefing all morning. This company is huge on safety and the well being of the driver. My kind of place! The afternoon was spent learning hours of service and paper logs.
Day 3 - Day 3, things changed dramatically. Started off with hands on learning of the pre-trip inspection. Then we got behind the wheel and learned all of the basic controls, how to log into the computer, and how to use the parking brakes. Then we got to drive around the yard at low speed! But it gets better..... Our instructor said we were going out on the road and told us that one of us needed to get in the drivers seat, yes I jumped right in. What a blast! After lunch we learned how to hook up the trailer, then out on the roads we went. Man, I was like a kid at Christmas when it was my turn to drive!!! The instructor let me drive longer than my other 2 classmates. I thought I had screwed the pooch. When we got back, he told me it was because I listened and learned quickly, it was a bonus!!!
Tomorrow we start learning how to back up straight line and I can't wait! No to dig into my online homework.

For anyone who reads this, here I am. I start with Roehl at the Ga. terminal 2 weeks from tomorrow and im excited to do so. A bit about me. I'm 55 years old, a husband, father, and the alpha to 2 spoiled dogs lol. I left home at 17 and a half for the Army, and after serving 6 years, I got out and became a police officer. This Thursday is my last day after almost 31 years of civilian service. The physical and mental scars are forever there but I still find reasons every day to smile, laugh, be nice to strangers, and keep moving forward.
Why do I want to become a truck driver? Well I've always looked at those big trucks and wished I was driving one going somewhere, anywhere. I could live in a different place every week and be perfectly happy. So I've done a ton of research and, thanks to this site, I committed to Roehl. Also thanks to this site I passed all 3 permit tests with flying colors!
Long hours, sleep is at a premium, solitude, and a paycheck to boot? Threaten me with a good time! I get to go to work in jeans and a shirt, not 30 pounds of gear. My commute is from the bed to the drivers seat, I have a home office setup. I might not get to shower for a few days at a time? Well, nobody's trying to.shoot me so I'm sure I'll be just fine. Im really looking forward to getting to the point where I can drive with some confidence and manage my clock to make the most that I can. I have no illusions about what I'm getting in to, but I honestly crave the lifestyle.
I hope to also find myself again, to figure out who I am, to find the human being I've buried deep down for years. I know I couldn't do that in some cushy office job or working at some big home improvement store. I want to travel and experience, I want to sing at the top of my lungs for hours at a time. I want to absorb all that I can.
For me this isn't just a job, it's a new start, a way to shed all those years. It's also a new adventure and a chance to make a decent living for my family on top of my retirement. To say I'm excited is an understatement.
