So you wanna be a trucker?

In my case, i really want this. I am now about 12k in debt getting here and that does not include the lost income for the periods of training and such. Here is my week as of 1/17/15

1/17 to 1/18 Load from neelys mo to london ky. 381 miles (not bad)

1/19 to 1/20 load from kimper ky to west jefferson ohio. 240 miles(Not bad)

1/20 to 1/20 load from ohio terminal to pataskala ohio. 17 miles (17 miles. Wtf. Went fine though)

1/20 to 1/20 load. 7 empty miles from terminal. Had to bobtail there cause another driver dropped and abandoned a loaded trailer in recievers driveway. "Hook up, back into dock and they will unload you quickly" so dispatch says. I get there around 8:30 pm with 3 hours on my 14. I thinking i got enough time to get back to terminal and get the hell out of there so i dont have to spend night at terminal. Good plan right? Well, lumper says "we cant unload you till midnight" and oh yea, you can not break on premises. Great. The planners are crying now. Cause i cant legally do this. So i tell them. I got this, dont worry. They were very appreciative. So i wait. Then they come get me early, i back in they unload me and i got 30 minuets on my 14 left. Nice, at least i can get to terminal. Well they did not get me paper work for 27 minuets. Nice. I am outta cigs, out of time and hungry at this point. So i leave and at the next intersection is a store. Got cigs and got to eat. No room to park so i spent the night on the side of the road.

1/21 to 1/21 columbus oh to austonburg oh. 186 miles. My dispatch says delivery on. 1/21 13:00 "dont be late or we will have a $500 fine" no problem. The further north i go the more snow and ice i see. Start seeing cars in ditches and such. Ooh boy. So i get there 2 hours early pull in and walk in with my paper work all proud that i just navigated my way through all the whether and made it. They take my paper work and say. "Your appointment is not till 1:00 am." i'm like muther f'er. So i go park in flying j right in front of reciever. Get ahold of dm and let him know. Well after about 2 hours he calls me and says the planners are freakin out cause i wont have time to do the next "VERY VERY IMPORTANT" load. I have already figured it out. I have to go back to reciever at 1am back in get unloaded and leave with out ever going on duty or driving so i dont start my 14. E logs put you on duty driving at a cetrtain speed and or x # of miles. So at midnight 30, i creep over in 3rd gear, get everything done and creep out. Status did not change. So i am good.

1/22 to 1/22 solon ohio to sidney ohio. 183 miles. So i show up for my "VERY IMPORTANT" load at 5:45 am. 15 minuets early. I am in a huge industrial area and had to call woman at shipper twice to figure out where they were. there were 4 shippers in one building so door after door, and i getting ****ed. So i call again to get help. Well shipping office is in the very front entrance through the glass doors. (Very unusal) every place i have been has some inconspicuous door on side of building. (There is not one single sign anywhere) when i get in there i tell her "i can't believe i missed all the signs" she said "what signs?" i said "exactly" so i sign in and then she tells me the appointment was for 6am the day before and they will not load me untill my company calls and reschedules. Great. Not my fault. Dispatch said today. So i inform dispatch. My dm sends me to truck stop close to terminal and here i sit. No word, nothing to do. I accepted a preplan to north Carolina but gotta wait for it to show up to terminal. Good break though, got a shower, ate a good breakfast at dennys. So now i just wait. Lol

With all this said and as frustrating as it is. I am still in good spirits and will not let this get me down. If nothing else its a great opportunity to be seen by my dm as a hustler who can get through it all with out throwing towel.

Am i out of line here?

My recruiter sent me an email checkin on me (her commission i'm sure. Lol) i explained some of the problems and also stated in the email that i like the system and my job but felt there were a few issues. Well next message i get is "i forwarded your email to terminal manager" oh god i thought, this is just great. Lol. My dm called me this morning and we had a really good talk and i told him my main problem was with 1 particular person on night shift. And low and behold his phone call followed me ariving at reciever 2 hours early and finding out that this same person had my appointment at 13:00 when actual appointment is at 1am. This person is useless and now he is seeing it first hand. Yesterday i did a 17 mile run, bobtailed 9 miles to pick up a trailer that another driver abandoned in a recievers driveway. I had to dock and get unloaded. Had 5 hours on my 14 and ran out. Had to sleep on side of road. Then this with wrong appointment time. I have taken all very gracefully with out on word. I am taking your advice. Hopefully it pays off. Lol

Need a quick answer. HOS

I am running out of my 14. If i go right from drive to sb can i get back my drive hours after 8 hours or is it whats left of the 14 which would be none? Ty

Unfortunately, You will only get back enough drive time to run out the rest of your 14. So, you will have to take a ten to get reset for the day. That is one thing a lot of us really hate about the HOS rules. That is why you will hear " wait as long as you can before you start the 14 clock". Once it starts, It doesn't stop.

Hope this helps

That may still work. I drove till 9pm had 3 hours left on my 14. Went straight to sb. Then can i drive 3 more hours at 5am?

Thank you for the advice. I went back and looked at my message to dm and i was way friendly than mentioned. I was going to apologize but after reading it was not that bad. I have been getting pretty good at patience and not letting things get to me. I will keep working on it.

Thank you both for your replys. I will back off some. As far as stocking up at a terminal i have done that now. But this is the first time at terminal with this truck. Also starting out brand new its hard to tell what you need. I will get it all handled and will not have to sweat the little stuff. As far as dm goes i have messaged him 4 times in 3 weeks and have 1 responce. I am not sure if he even exist. Lol

Am i out of line here?

I hate the thought of typing all this out but i am gonna try to keep it short. From the beginning (3 months in) i have had no support whatsoever from my home terminal. On one occasion we were dispatched back to back with loads and on one of them in the notes it stated that we must strap the load or we would not be allowed out the gate. So we preplanned a stop to buy 2 straps. We get there and send in the request for a company advance for said items. My codriver is the one who sent it. Came back as denied. Well after pulling some teeth the person who denied finally explained why (his status had not changed yet from student) and that we needed to goto t a terminalto get the straps. We preplanned our trip and a terminal was a 100 miles away. So i just sent the request myself and it went through. Solved no thanks to the night shift at terminal.

On another occasion i had been adding water to top off coolant and did not want to dilute it to where it would freeze and i was ready for a gallon of oil and washer fluid. So i got the total with tax and sent in the request for a company advance for $38 and was denied. Here we go again. So i send a message, "why?" her responce was "because you have exceeded your advance amount" (i had to buy a wiper arm, that put me over i guess) i explained that this was not "MY"advance and that i was not trying to buy fuzzy dice for the truck and asked if she was suggesting that i drive this company truck without out oil and coolant and with a dirty windshield that would might hinder my ability to safely operate this cmv. Her responce was "buy it yourself and get reimbursed" NOW I AM F'N MAD!!! I already pay for my own scale tickets and other minor stuff and wait a week to get it back. so before i express my feelings towards her i call the roadstar oncall break down hotline and ask them if i should run this truck as is. They had me fixed up in 2 minuets.

Todays episode was i had a crappy run with 24 hours to deliver a 4 hour run with hard appointments. Then i accepted a load for 17 miles that delivered many hours later. All crap. So i accept all and send my dm a message. "I have taken these crappy runs, please try to get me something with miles. Thank you" not one word. Nothing, not even a kiss my ass.

As i am new to this i still have learning to do. When i have made a mistake on the qualcomm with empty calls and such i would message my dm and say what am i doing wrong and i would get a message. "fixed" no explanation as to what i did wrong so i can correct it the next time. I really dont mean to sound like a whiney ***** but i feel as though they should be doing more. I would expect a denial with an explanation and a alternative solution. I would expect that if i communicate with my dm that i should at least get a responce. I am not making bs request. Also i have not been late once and no accidents. I am doing my job. I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

Do trucking companies mean what they say?

Do trucking companies mean what they say when they say No NYC and No Canada? Are they honest about training pay? What is forced dispatch? The dispatch guy is your boss?? Well,I can do dispatch too,ya know!

Let me tell you what i told myself through this whole ordeal. "No one is telling me the truth. Everyone is going to lie to me. And i will not believe anything till i see it for myself." i have yet to be disappointed. In fact there has been a few truths that have come to be. Good luck

"YOU'VE GOT MAIL"

That's how it was set up at my previous company. Such a pain!

There's a way you can play the message over the speakers.

Have your volume turned on. Click on the New Message Logo and then hit Select on your QC.

Now it depends on your QC but you can play the message on most of them. Play around with it.

Hey, it works. Well atleast good enough to know what the message is. Lol. Thats awesome. Thank you
