Best Flatbed companies for a new student
I would be remiss if I didn't put in a plug for my company, Jones Brothers Trucking in Missoula, MT. Best people I've ever worked for, in any industry. PM me if you want more info.
Sorry but I don't live anywhere near Montana but would like to see it someday and maybe move there, LOL
But I have to say, As I was on the way to florida this past weekend I saw quite a few Jones Bros. Trucks on 75, and from what I saw when I googled them just now they have quite a few terminals in the southern states also, Alabama and Mississippi. No telling how big they are or how many terminals they have.

I'm from Nashville. There are a few ways around the city. 155 and 840. Typically though I'm in and out. I actually got through atl today going about 60 all the way through, a new record. Guess the clowns hadn't got up yet. And as Brett said, the west side is typically better.
I went thru Atlanta about 1030 am and it was a mess, just trying to get over all of the idiots driving on I75. I figured about an hour to get thru town on 75 and it was a nightmare. coming back I wanted to hit Birmingham and figured the traffic would lessen but so much for thinking that. I hit hit I85 to I20 thinking that would be a nice little run but thought wrong. Got on 85 and was going about 55mph the whole wayand then halfway there was construction the rest of the way to 20. Then I finally got to 20 and from there to about the state line was worse than driving thru ATL, went about 25mph - 35mph almost to the state line. Once I hit the state line it kinda cleared up all the way to Birmingham. I knew there was a reason I didn't like going thru ATL, lmao!!!

Nope. No reason no one is working for them. Could be they are much small than other flatbed companies and people are picking the large more well known companies.
I don't think they would have anything to do with me cause there are times I talk like a sailor tbh, lol

Melton truck lines going full auto?
David S wrote:
I'm currently prepareing for school and I hope to gain a lot of experience using a manual transmission before moving to an automatic.........and not the other way around. LOL
David most schools; Company-Sponsored or Private Schools use 8 or 10 speed manual transmissions. Beyond that, it's a toss up on road training with an automatic shift or manual shift transmission truck. Most of the larger carriers are moving away from manual transmissions.
I have to say yes they are going to autos eventually, I talked with one of their drivers Saturday and he said they was going to auto's cause most of the new drivers these days can't figureout how to work manuals. Again I'm telling you this from a driver with Melton!!

Application Approved For Maverick School
Good to hear. I'm currently with maverick and they are a top notch company. We have excellent instructors in little Rock and everything that the recruiter told me was accurate. However, I'm not sure how long you may have to sit on that waiting list. If you don't have a cdl it could be a while before they get you out there. They only train 12 at a time and are not like larger companies that bring in lots of people at once. I'd suggest obtaining your cdl prior if possible.
Maverick told me they wouldn't touch me cause I've not worked for the past 12 years

Thank you all for the input. I'm already aware it may be difficult and is unorthodox of a typical trucker's life. Personally speaking, I will not be content with "just getting the blood pumping" with stuff that can be done anywhere (i.e. laps, biking, dumbbells, stretches), which was already indicated and mentioned would be done on the norm anyway in the question. I'll be figuring out a way to get the heavy weights workouts (i.e. "gym rat", with various weights and machines) at a gym into my schedule -- it doesn't need to be routine and nightly, but as often as my schedule and routes would allow. I'd naturally be looking into gyms with 24-hour access (already have an account with Gold's, but that doesn't mean it's a good membership for nationwide gyms).... so scheduling is impertinent, even less so considering the heavy workouts are my stress relievers (and hence "worth the hassle", especially if it's also doubled as a shower stop). Obviously, I'm into fitness (again, "gym rat"), not just general "maintaining". I'm sure there's another driver out there who shares a similar level of ('shredded' or 'elite' might be appropriate word here) fitness/training that I'm seeking to continue onto the roads. I know they exist even if not prevalent, so... question of experiences with nationwide gym memberships while OTR still remains for the "shredded" drivers.
Please don't take offense by my response -- I did want to make it clear I wasn't looking for basic "anywhere" fitness tips! It had already been stated it'd be part of the OTR norm.
Matt M. - Thank you for mentioning a fitness program with Prime. I see they also have a pet policy. I shall look into it further! That's actually one question I will have for employers - what fitness incentives and programs/discounts they offer to their employees!
While I understand I may not be able to park at a facility, I figure I'd be able to come in just enough to use a bicycle or to walk, even if it's still a couple miles away. Just chalk it up as extra exercise LOL
Oh, and no, the gym wouldn't be for treadmills. I can walk/run around on breaks for that! I actually use gyms for the gym things (the equip) and spend a while, haha. Don't quite think jugs of water will do for deadlifts, so yeah, anyone with experience as OTR driver with a nationwide gym membership?
You want a good workout just about daily, go to flatbedding, thats what I'm gona do once I get in with a company!!

Fear/anxiety with the big rigs
The video in "How Does A Weigh Station Work" is the best explanation that it isn't "Us vs Them". It's a bit long, but worth every minute.
That was a pretty good video dude, thanks!!

Work history records?
My suggestion to you is this, go to your nearest SSI office and you can get a printout of your past employers for a few dollars, at least I did that 20 years ago also, lol. But I'm sure if you go there they can do it, to be safe I would call the local pofice 1st and see what they say. Best of luck to ya dude.
