Question for parent drivers

If you get an iPhone you can lock the App Store and delete safari so you can have some control over what they're doing on it

How to get the right mindset?

For real. The way you get the trailer in there doesn't have to look pretty as long as the end result is it's in there and nothing is broken. Even now after 13 years of trucking I still have days where I just don't have it backing but I still take my time

We have to shift people out of this mindset of what a "successful" back up looks like as well.

If the trailer is where you intended it, your equipment is undamaged, the equipment next to you is undamaged, and the doc door is intact, I'd say that's a pretty successful backing job.

For the mindset it's all about having an appropriate outlet for stresses. My outlets are Christianity and rigorous exercise. As for the backing never be in a rush, I've never took my time and got into a pickle. But when I'm in a rush that's when trouble can happen.

Are you really sure that this is what you want?

I see my family a lot but I'm a local line hauler and it took a while to get to the position I'm in. And this job isn't for everyone, but every job out there isn't for everyone. This job can have hours of sucking, but also hours where it's the easiest job on the planet, usually between may through October

Useful items to bring on the road?

Whether in the army going to the field or deploying to Iraq, or going camping as a civilian. The first this I always pack is a comfortable pillow.

Do you know how to float gears?

Also wanted to add, today was the first day I drove in traffic in the manual. And boy that was a little tricky! I over-revved a few times not paying enough attention to my rpm's. And sometimes forgot what gear I was in and didn't use the trick I was taught to look at my speed to find out what gear to be in. Also been a few years since I was on the road at all. But it went well!

Getting Back Into Truck Driving

You'll probably have to take a job with a company that doesn't pay a lot. Or a local gig where you do a lot of physical work like using a hand truck. Nothing you have done is non recoverable but if you get another gig just take your time and don't be in a hurry

Hazmat Recommendation

It's worth it if you're working or planning on working for a company that hauls hazmat. If you're not currently working for a company hauling hazmat it's kind of a waste of money, cause you can add the endorsement to your license at any time. There is a waiting period for the background checks
