When Trucks Are Blocking Open Parking Spots

If it's preventing me from getting into a spot, I just grumble and move on. If I am parked in, I will pound on the door, pound on the sleeper, whatever it takes.

Breakdown x4, new truck, rinse and repeat

It's crazy that the dealer could not come up with anything, but your home shop could. I was a HOW driver for 4 years; I always felt that the shop in Wisconsin did a great job.

Not sure what to make of it

People may give you a hard time, say you're being paranoid, but ignore them. We all have intuition, and if yours was going off, it's worth listening to. I get loads out of Rio Rico, and as we know, human smuggling and drugs across the border are a real thing. This most likely was just a weird coincidence, but you lost nothing by moving on, and gained some peace of mind.

Maybe he was picking up scale tickets for the trading cards that come with 'em.

What sort of navigation system do ya'll use?

I use Rand McNally GPS, I like it because it's what I'm used to. I could not rely on my phone or ELD device, since both use the internet, and I loose signal in places. Typically, I go to the same stops, but for new ones, I always look at a satellite view on Google to check out a few miles around the destination.

New Yorker magazine article about truckers

double-quotes-start.png

I would like to read this, but apparently, I have already read my "one free article" from The New Yorker. I can subscribe at the price of $6 for 3 months (not bad), but then it auto-renews at $117 for a year - and I tend to forget about cancelling before the auto-renewal kicks in. That's how they get ya!

Deb, you are exactly right about the marketing thing.

Potato King? Are you from the Stevens Point area?

Potato King is located in La Crosse (Wisconsin).

Is a CDL worthwhile for summer work

I got my CDL training at the Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, then went to work for HO Wolding, who reimbursed my tuition cost. The college had some kind of arrangement with Schneider to train people, so that may be an option for you. Seems to me you should be able to find something that would work out as a summer gig, maybe not a "dream job", but just get your foot in the door somewhere.

Avoiding crowed truck stops

If given the choice, I avoid crowed truck stops like the plague. My feeling is that if I'm ever gonna get hit, that's where it's most likely to happen. Late afternoon/early evening, those places are total s**t shows, and I want no part of it.
