Crossing the border with spouse? Is it allowed?
Canada with some exceptions is still requiring 14 day quarantine upon entry I believe.

What would you do? Almost sideswiped.
Me personally would chew his ass first chance I get and tell him to get a headset and use it. When I first started that was actually one of the first things my boss said was a definite nono.

Questions about brake shoes/lining
Chips or a crack will be fine as long as they are not wore thin. There is a certain % that needs to be there to remain legal. Is this your own truck, if so, replacing is pretty quick and easy. Had to replace 2 the other day and took me and another guy less than an hour. That was at the shop with the right tools of coarse.

Can I rent and drive a semi truck and trailer for personal (non-commercial) use. Yes, I have a CDL
Depending on where you are located there are lots of places where they can be rented by the week or month or season. I am talking tractor and the dry van is no problem to find. In ag country they are rented or short term leased all the time to replace one that is broke down in the shop during harvest.

Free lunch at......the scalehouse!?
I do not get that way much but the one on I-35 southbound when entering Iowa near Northwood has done the free dinner thing a couple times since the covid, whatever you call it, has started. They also gave away free PPE at least once that I know of. They were grilling brats and burgers one time.

Anyone have birds hit their windshield?
Never with the Semi but I had a wild turkey hit the passenger side of my pickup and smash the windshield and I was not traveling over 10 mph at the time so it was all bird. And no it did not kill the bird.

Wanna save the world?? Ask a truck driver!
I just started trucking and until now have farmed and continue to since the early 80's. As far as non GMO and organic they are just terms that really mean nothing in the real world as far as feeding it. Since every food you eat has been "genetically modified" whether it is massed produced or grown in your garden, and if trying to grow all our food organically the world would starve because of lack of production. Just my little rant to those who think non-GMO and organic is the way all our food should be grown.

I find adjusting the seat height during the day so not always the same can help. If you are not definitely use your arm rests. Take a look at your seat, there are lots of adjustments to them as far as fore and aft and tilt that can make a difference. You can also buy a cushion, I use one once in a while but very seldom anymore. And it will get better over time.

Hauling utility trailors to tractor supply
From what I have seen when you tighten straps you will pull down on the suspension of the trailer to where it will be tight against blocks or the next trailer below it. And depending on the size and style of trailer some tires may be removed while others are left on.

Aspiring Truck Driver with some questions
Distance to the company will not matter with the big national companies as they are all over and will bring you in for training. I went private school to get CDL but was in far different circumstance than you. I had a job lined up and just needed the CDL itself as I had drove semis on the farm for 30 years. You should definitely consider a company sponsored program as with that you have a job waiting when finished with school and the cost is usually nothing as long as you stay with company for a set period. These big companies go all across the nation so your actual home address does not make much difference. Good luck
