Hey all you fabulous folks!

So I wanted to bring you all on my amazing trucking journey I have decided to partake in, into the wonderful world of the Georgia Driving Academy here in Conyers, Ga. To let me start off my name is Madison and I just enrolled here as I am doing the company sponsored training for Stevens Transport, and its because of the lack of blogs and reviews I found about my company or school I wanted to give folks an insight on the in and outs here, if they are thinking of attending here or going with the company.

So upon arrival on day ONE, I previously checked into my hotel the night before super early and woke up at 5:20 to catch a shuttle and be in class by 7 am. Hey! A girl needs her morning time alright lol But once class started we met one of our instructors and throughout that entire day we went over highlighted the entire first and half of the general knowledge chapter. Also, on that day the folks who attended school and weren't apart of Stevens took their drug tests and and physicals as the Stevens group would take theirs the next day.          Coming up on day TWO, We finished highlighting general knowledge and moved onto air brakes, and combination vehicles and watched a few videos and signed paperwork. Today was the day the Stevens group took their drug tests and physicals. To be honest I was super nervous because the school had taken the time to change my name in the roster and be sure that name is called correctly. I was extremely happy because, even though I am an openly transgender girl, and I don't mind questions or anything and can tolerate just about any kind of person after growing up in the big city of Atlanta. The only excruciating thing to hear is my first name because its so 'strong" to my ear lol so I rather use my real middle name (I don't see why not). However, when everything was said and done I passed my physical and drug tests. YAY!!!

Next up day THREE, As day 3 came it turned out to be nothing but pure in class practice tests ALLLL DAYYYYY!!! When I tell you repetition can drive you crazy OMG repetition can drive you MAD! Subsequently, this is one of the best things we have done all week and I enjoyed every minute of it, because I learned things I thought I knew, when I really didn't. Throughout the day we watched videos and did more tests and it was awesome and I kept making perfect A's. Some of the class not so much. But I wouldn't of done so well if it wasn't for the High Road Training Program here. I haven't been lurking around this website for 3 weeks now reading blogs, taking tests, and researching everything because this website is the bees knees hunny! I have recommended it to everyone!

Day FOUR today! and so because of all my diligent studying and serious motivation to be a fabulous trucker of Stevens, when it was time to go out and test *cough* a day early. I passed my cdl permit with flying colors and received Gk 94, AB 100, CV 98!! Talk about making my momma proud!!! lol So anyway, after walking away with a huge smile on my face and a Dairy Queen smoothie I was too excited and motivated to continue on my journey!

Now I know it has only been four days and I'm way too excited for my own good but it just goes to show you how awesome I think this industry is and I can't wait to join it. But I won't drown this post with my flowery words and sense of joy, but I will be back with a few updates after a few days, its hard to post everyday lol OH!! and if anyone hears from Brett can you let him know Im going bonkers on here trying to use my own picture on here as an avatar lol See you all later!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Combination Vehicle:

A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

Madison I was surprised also when I started surfingTrucking Truth and I didn't find much info on Stevens Transport. I was worried that it might not be the best choice buyt so far I am happy.

I am in my final week of school here at Careers Work Wide in Keensburg Colorado (near Denver). My experience so far is very similar to yours except all the studying for the CDL test was left up to us in our free time. But thanks to the High Road program I had very high scores.

Keep up the great attitude and keep blogging how your experience at school goes. Maybe our paths will cross in the future. Good luck....

My nephew currently drives for Stevens.. he loves it. He says that, yes, some companies pay a bit more, but he gets a solid 3k miles every week with them. He'll have 1 year with them as of next month and not looking to go elsewhere.
