The road test is pretty basic all they wanna see is u can handle the truck and not panic. The first test is just a couple of miles. If they think they need to do some work with you or are not sure about you then a couple days later they will go back out in the truck with u for like 15 miles maybe for final decision. They do not care if you float gears at all as long as u can keep control it's however you wanna do it. The trainers up there are pretty cool as long as you aren't full of crap they are easy to get along with. Good luck to you
An expression used to describe someone who is shifting gears without using the clutch at all. Drivers are taught to "Double Clutch" or press and release the clutch twice for each gear shift. If you're floating gears it means you're simply shifting without using the clutch at all.
Thanks for the info Evan. Another question, is the pre-trip inspection part of the driving test?
A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.
Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

So today I got the approval from Melton. I head off to orientation on the 26th. My biggest concern is the driving test. Anyone know what is involved? Up until two months ago it had been 10 years since being in a truck. Mostly what I've done is hauling logs and chip trailers. I'm not to bad at backing up so long as they don't mind me pulling up a time or three, and they don't ask me to parallel park it. I'm sure I could manage, just been a really long time.
Is there anything that I should be aware of? I know watching mirrors and not hitting curbs and stuff. I'm hoping it's ok to float gears , I generally don't double clutch. Though the rig I'm in now has some tranny problems and gets hung up from time to time.
Anyway, any advice is very much appreciated. Can't wait to get to Tulsa and learn some skateboarding.
Float Gears:

Double Clutch:
To engage and then disengage the clutch twice for every gear change.
When double clutching you will push in the clutch, take the gearshift out of gear, release the clutch, press the clutch in again, shift the gearshift into the next gear, then release the clutch.
This is done on standard transmissions which do not have synchronizers in them, like those found in almost all Class A trucks.
