Got the call from Prime 2 days ago and I leave on Saturday. I'm not prepared at all. I'm about as much of a child as any 25 could ever be and this step is huge. I had been attending a CDL class at a local university but I'm definitely not ready for this. I have only traveled to one other state in my adult life. I'm putting on a "brave" face for my family and friends but in reality I'm absolutely terrified. I have a stupid masculinity complex that keeps me from admitting these things. Anyways, cheers to all of you who have gone through this. The first days of my life lay before my feet.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

You've got a lot of "firsts" ahead of you; but don't let that freak you out, this stuff is new to everyone at the beginning. Have a good attitude, learn everything you can, be easy to get along with, and you'll do fine. Embrace the adventure!!

Being a complete Greenhorn has its benefits: You have no bad habits or past practices to keep you from learning new ones.

Good luck in your endeavors. I am confident that you will do fine.
