Just curious did you use that vehicle to pass the yard skills, pre trip and road test? Because anyone who is taking those practical tests in a semi will need the air brake endorsement since all modern semi's have air brakes.

I don't think you're required to take the cdl driving exam in a semi though, if he wanted, yeah he could use that truck and trailer setup to take the test, he would just have a restriction on his license from being able to use a vehicle with airbrakes.
Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, but that was my understanding the last time (before considering semi truck driving) I looked at getting a CDL. The info I read said you needed to do driving test in the vehicle you are getting a cdl for... bus, pick up truck with goosneck trailer, semi truck, etc.
