Will try to make this as short as possible but I'm seriously considering a career in trucking and I have a few questions concerning my eligibility. I pulled up my MVR and I'm assuming I am looking at the same thing the company would be seeing after I applied.

I have three citations. Two for speeding, 53 in a 35, and another for 86 in a 75. And a third for following too closely which happen in 2014 which was an accident I was at fault for. And I only have two points on my license. I am currently disqualified to get a CDL until February 20th. Basically the question is with these things on my driving record, am I eligible to become a truck driver?

And am I seeing the same thing my employer would be seeing? Is there driving check more in depth than a MVR?

I still have two outstanding tickets that are not paid for. I am on probation for them. Is it possible I can enroll in a company sponsored school and use the money they give me to pay them off? Like for example if I'm getting $200 a week I can pay all my outstanding tickets off fairly fast. And will the trucking company even know about these outstanding tickets? They aren't on my MVR...

Thanks.

Oh and can someone explain to me what a moving violation is? I kinda know and I'm assuming these citations aren't moving violations.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

MVR:

Motor Vehicle Record

An MVR is a report of your driving history, as reported from your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Information on this report may include Drivers License information, point history, violations, convictions, and license status on your driving record.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but those are most certainly moving violations. Non moving violations at things like parking tickets, head light out etc.

Now as for your eligibility you have 2 tickets for 18 over and one for 11 over and then a ticket that was the result of a rear end collision. Add to that the fact that you have not paid for 2 of the speeding tickets yet and I would say your chances of being hired are slim to none. It is not impossible but it would probably be at some place like Carolina Cargo driving team for a very low wage.

I know that a lot of people rip them for their low wage but you have to look at it from their point of view, their insurance rates for drivers with history like yours and even worse have to be astronomical. They have to offset these costs some place and they really can't charge more than the industry is willing to pay so is comes from the driver wage.

They seem to be kind of a last chance company.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
