Will be there on sunday morning to start my orientation on Monday coming from Charlotte NC so its a 24 hour grey dog ride! Your posts are incredibly informative, but i must ask how much practice do you get before you take that simulator test? The fact that i never drove a truck befor emakes me nervous as it seems you have one practice run and then test! Keep the updates coming as well very informative, I will probably share my experience as well!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

My trainer is on his way here to pick me up. While I was hoping to head west, or first run is to PA. (He's actually under the load and just swinging by to pick me up)

I'll start a new topic once I get on the truck.

As far as the simulator goes, I already had my CDL before coming here. As a student, I would imagine that you're going to get plenty of practice. They also have "Prime East" which is where the backing pad is located.

A couple of things I've noticed about the simulator and the test. A couple of people had to retake their test for not wearing theirs seat belt. (There are cameras on the simulator so the instructor can see you)

The simulator, although pretty life like, doesn't give you the feed back like a normal truck. By this I mean that during my practice run, I was in high range the whole time. In a real truck, you would feel the truck lug, and you'd immediately know. In the sim, nothing happened except that it was pretty slow.

Keep in mind, that they know that your there to learn. Just be very professional in your conduct. (Yes sir, no sir, don't try to hide anything in your background or work history, and DON'T BE LATE! Actually, get there early! The class rooms are usually open already 30 min. prior. And remember this too. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. )

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
