I'm still young and this year i'll get 18 and i wanted to know how to become a us truck but I'm a Mauritian and one thing that I read on the net is that we must have experience in our own country and when going to another country we must go to a trucking school for obtaining the trucking licences required to drive in the foreign country. I love us rigs that why I wanted to be truck driver in your country. I know well the advantages and disadvantages as i always search on the net. Thank you for your comprehension.

Welcome to the forum Sebastien,

Well if you choose to do so here in the United States you are in for an uphill battle but not impossible. Luckily for you being only 18 years old one thing you have in your favor is time. It's going to be a long process. Many of us on the forum will agree are vocation is extremely rewarding and extremely difficult at the same time.

Your only 18 so your first hurdle will be your age. In order to cross state lines in a commercial vehicle you need to be at least 21y.o. This gives you time to decide if this long process will be worth the effort your going to have put into it.

Of course you will need a work visa and most likely a green card before you come over to the U.S. This is a difficult task in itself these days. With the world climate the way it is now its ever more difficult to just be able to accomplish this. You also may need a sponsor family or company to be allowed to work here. So if you have any family or friends in the U.S. That are citizens now is the time for you to make them you best friends. Unfortunately at the time I do not know of any Trucking Company's that are sponsoring foreign nationals at this time.

After you achieve a work status or citizenship you need to make your way over here and obtain a regular drivers license. Once you have a year driving experience with a car you can qualify for a commercial drivers license. So basically the first year you may have to find something else to do.

When you do get your regular DL make sure you keep it Squeaky Clean. Any accident or violation will make it almost impossible to get a CDL for a while. In closing I commend you for your interest and passion to drive here. If you truly want it be ready to fight for it. (Not Literally) LOL. It's an uphill battle for you but not impossible. Good Luck

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
