We are still alive and rolling. Just busy and/or tired. Depending on what time of the day you ask.

Delcy...trucking is not for the faint of heart. Its stressy, long hours, rude people, and thankless. For those women who do get into it, I think its mostly the call of the open road, and the freedom from the 9 to 5 grind. But we pay a high price for those things, higher than the guys. You may be better served at looking into driving a short truck, like a delivery. I have a girlfriend who hauls flowers all over in a little straight truck. She only has to have a class B license, and loves her job. Now I can see a woman doing the flower thing...a guy ?? not so much. Delcy, think long and hard on this type of a lifestyle change. I'm a little older than you (63), and I know my old body can't take the beating a truck gives out, even with the air seats, and power steering. I can' crank up trailers anymore, and if I had to swing a trailer door on an up hill slant, I know it just flat wouldn't happen. Trucking, even if you pull a box trailer is still strenuous at times. And crawling in and out of a truck a bunch of times a day can be taxing on old joints.. Good luck with your choice, and wahtever you decide, we will be here to help you in any way we can.

Hi Ladies,

I am just starting the process, I have been looking into schools and found 2 that with company sponsorships. One is out of state and one is not. I have a difficult situation as I am a single mom to a 3 year old now I have been getting some negative feedback when I say that, but I am a single mom who has to put food on the table n need to purchase a table(lol). I am going to have a rough road ahead but the faster I do this the faster I can go local.

Kathryn...in todays economy, you have to do what you have to do. There are very few, if any jobs right now that a regular person can get that will pay enough to raise a child as a single parent. So you won't get any grief here about your choice of going into trucking. I'll give you my usual "mommy" litany, tho.... You child is young...should you be home to interact, and care for him ??? Yes. But in the REAL world..its not possible all the time. But you seem to have a plan...and I think its one that will work out well for you. YOU want to get your CDL , get trained, do your year OTR for experience, THEN you want to get a local gig, so you CAN be home to raise your child.... GOOD PLAN !!!! You can invest in a year of OTR, to get a job that will support you and your child, with you being home as much as possible as a local driver.... If anyone has a problem with your plan....they have never walked in your tennies..so don't worry about their opinion... Now....lets get you started in this trucking gig !!!! I don't know where you live, so here's a few hard facts to help you. It doesn't matter where you live, when it comes to the company your drive for....as long as you are within their freight lanes...you will get home. And, in the same vein...it doesn't matter where the school is that you go to...mostly all of them bunk you up in a motel, and give you a meal allowance, etc. But those are things you can ask about. So don't limit yourself in that way...Aim for the prize...a company that runs trucks close to your house, that you want to spend a year driving for, that has a CDL school...THATS what you need to look for. Here's a link to help Company-Sponsored Training ...And while you are at it...here's the BIBLE of study guides...Once you have waded thru this, you will go to that school with more knowledge than all the other people in your class PUT TOGETHER !!! High Road Training Program Its tough, no lie,but Its great. There are quite a few "mom drivers" on this site...Redgator has 2 little girls, and alot of our other lady drivers have grandchildren they miss at home...As long as you have the support of your family, and a good, safe person to care for your child while you are laying out your future....YOU CAN DO THIS !!!! We are so glad that you found out site..WELCOME TO TT !!! Feel free to post here, or on the general forum....you are welcome in any and all areas. Theres alot to learn here, so sit back and enjoy..And any questions, fee free to ask them on either forum.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

I passed on the 1st try :) Just a recap - I went through Swift Academy in AZ, in Nov, I did 3wks & had to repeat a week #2 (skills) for not passing my evaluations... then on my 3rd (road) week I didn't pass my evaluations again... unfortunately I got sent home because the next weeks class was too full. 6 weeks later I finally got called back and graduated this time around!!! woohoo!!! Absolutely loving this new adventure. Found a wonderful teammate, finished my training and have dealt with some of the hardest issues we face being away from loved ones. Hoping to get home for the first time in 5 months come February. Found out I-80 through Wyoming sucks this time if year.
