When you have a 34 hour reset and you are a thousand miles from home, what are some of the things you do out there besides sitting your tractor and watching TV. Do companies frown on using the tractor to say go see a local tourist attraction or to go shopping. Are there companies out there that allow you to use the tractor in that capacity. Thanks

If you're on a reaet, you must be completely relieved of duty.. So no, you can't go cruising around in your truck. Carry a bicycle, call a cab, go hiking. Where there's a will there's a way.

For those days, and I had quite a few of them, I always had a small daypack and a good pair of hiking or running shoes. During that break, getting out and away from that truck is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself.

Sue is right. When that truck rolls, your 34 ends. Most companies have the Qualcomms set to allow minor movement, in case you are forced to move to a different parking spot or something, but going to a movie in the truck is probably out.

However, that said, I will have to try to remember that idea for the next time I'm going on a 34 bobtail. I suspect that at least some movie theatres wouldn't mind if a trucker did a 34 in their lot, provided they park far from the doors to keep our big line-of-sight-killing machine from interfering with patron parking.

That is, I would call the theater, ask if it was OK to park there overnight if I watch a few movies, then drive there, and start my 34 after I arrive, then catch up on a few movies.

Bobtail:

"Bobtailing" means you are driving a tractor without a trailer attached.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

Were I going to do a 34, I would maybe find a place near some activities, and find if there is truck parking there. That way you are set. Question is, are you under a trailer? Some companies do not allow you to drop your trailer and bobtail elsewhere.

I would inquire as to what your company's policy is about dropping trailers.
