If you are asking what I think you are then you may want to save your money. Trucking as a back up plan can work but if you go to school and don't use your license right away then you are going to have to go back to school if the time comes that you ever want to drive. If you have a full time career that you plan on keeping I would forgo the expense of getting a cdl and just focus on the other career. Now if you plan on changing careers then the option of going to school on the weekends is a valid choice but you could also go with a company that will pay you while you are going to school such as roehl and others. But if you take that option there is a 1 year contract to fulfill.

Thanks very much, I appreciate it :)

I didn't know that I might have to go back again. I am not planning to switch career, yet. But I am definitely leaning towards your advice. One of the best advice!!!

I could have never thought of it on my own, thanks very much :)

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Yeah, this. Best fully-informative summary ever.

Also, when Company Sponsored Schools are discussed, they arent talking about your current employer paying for your CDL school. A Company Sponsored School is operated or contracted to a TRUCKING COMPANY that has their OWN school vs. A community college or other stand alone CDL program that is not affiliated with a specific trucking company.

But absolutely if you wont be using your new CDL within the first 1-3 months, its best to hold off on school until you are ready to change careers.
