Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a career change and I think I'm gonna take a shot at trucking. First off let me say this is not a knee jerk decision. I've been researching this for a few months now. To give you a little of my background , I was active duty military from 96 to 04. I left the military to be a police officer. I've been a police officer for the last 12 years. I'm also currently in the reserves to finish out my military time. Part of my duties in the military is driving T/T. Although I don't have OTR experience I'm not totally blind to driving trucks. I'm going to get my CDL using the military waiver. I still have to go and take the written test, which I plan on doing next week. I want to drive flatbed because that's what I'm used to in the military. I've applied to a couple of companies (Roehl and Maverick) and plan to apply to TMC. They all seem to be "military friendly". What are your thoughts on these three companies for a beginner? Living in Alabama would one company out weigh the others. Any input would be appreciated.
CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
OTR:
Over The Road
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
