My company's philosophy is a). It's OUR equipment. b) 1 empty out, for every load delivered. c) we do not provide free storage units for our customers.

They know the rules and if they try to press and not release OUR equipment to us, a simple call to my company and my company will then call them back to remind them of the policy.

That just reminded me of my first issue with a customer. I bobtailed a good 150 or so miles to a target store in Aberdeen SD to pick up an empty. I got there and told them I was to take the empty they had, they told me they still needed it. Without knowing I had to put in an exception on my Qualcomm , I called my DBL and told him the situation, he said just take it and go. Personally, I could not do that without the customer saying it's ok. I don't see it as ethical, even it is our property. Waited a good 4 hours for Schneider and Target corporate to hash it out. Eventually was told to bobtail back out. Yeah that was 4h wasted, but I felt I was the better man in that situation.

Bobtail:

"Bobtailing" means you are driving a tractor without a trailer attached.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated
