Olga, while you ride with Daniel, you will learn so much !! All you have to do is watch, and ask lots of questions. Watch him shift gears, watch how he backs up, and watch as he maneuvers around things. You will be amazed how much you will learn. Also...while you are just riding with him, you will get used to all the weird things about the truck...things that now, probably startle you. but you will get used to them. Me, I LOVE sleeping while the truck is moving..Why ?? cuz its like sleeping in a massage bed !! The vibration just relaxes all my muscles. You need to try it....trust me...lay on your back, close your eyes and relax...let the deep rumble of the exhaust, and the vibration of the truck rock you to sleep.. After riding with Daniel for awhile, you will know whether you will ever want to get behind the steering wheel and learn to drive. But you really do need to have Daniels pull into the back of a truck stop parking lot, and let you mess around with slow movement steering. It will be a real experience, and you won't be able to hurt anything.....and it may just put that trucker yearning in your blood. So theres alot of time for you to figure out what you do, and don't like about trucking......just take it slow. And enjoy the ride !!!!

Hi, I starting riding with my man like in Sept. 2012 with the hopes of learning to drive. I got my drivers permit shortly thereafter. My first driving experience was in a dirt lot. Just the tractor, no trailer. Boy, was that a hoot, let me tell ya. You have to learn to crawl before you can walk and then run. My man drives for our local lumber yard twice a week. So, my lessons are a bit at a time. I hope to have my CDL by summer. I have driven through mountains here, on the freeway and a bit in the city of Phoenix AZ. I still need fine tuning. Also, haven't done much backing up yet. As, far as learning to back up, he bought me a garden tractor with a steering wheel, so I can use that to begin to get the "hang" of backing up. He will put mirrors on it and get me a long tongued trailer to practice with. I will burn a lot less fuel that way. It's been frustrating at times. There is so much to learn. I love it. Just try it you might find you totally love it. Remember, you both need to bring all your patience and humor with you during your lessons. Enjoy the ride !dancing-banana.gifgood-luck.gif

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Jackie...is great that you are learning to drive...but theres a huge problem that will smack you in the face when you go to get a driving job...Because of the insurance rules, ALL companies will require that you have gone thru a cdl school with ATLEAST 160 hours of class and driving time. Its wonderful that you have learned to drive....but you will still have to do the school thing. If your guy drives for a company that has their own cdl school, or hires graduates from cdl schools, then he may be able to be your trainer. If not, and if you two want to team, or you wan him to be your trainer, you two have some planning to do...soon. Keep comin' in here, we are here to help, and feel free to post on this forum, or the general forum...we all post all over smile.gif
