OKAY

I am got my legal affair rescheduled now I am down to the wire to leave for Prime but I also got approved for the WIA program to pay for my private school...However, it will be another couple weeks before everything with the school gets finalized!

Should I take the PRIME opportunity or go local private school? If I don't leave for Prime by Mon I will have to reapply! I need advice. I also need some advice on packing! I'm so nervous!!

Happy But Confused!

I'd go with the WIA....and private school !!!!! They MAKE SURE YOU PASS !!!! Prime...they give you a chance to pass...alot don't make it. So I'd take the private school, paid for by WIA...then you will owe no one nothing !!!!! AND you can still go with Prime...you just apply AFTER you get your CDL...then you will just do some classroom for company paperwork, and head out with a trainer...easy smeasy !!!!

Definitely PRIVATE SCHOOL !!!!!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hi Redgator,is WEL a good company to work for?

Serah, I have worked for WEL my whole driving career. I love them. Some ppl might not but I do. Its a small co. 500 trucks which is smaller than most. The pay is great for rookies. 4 days oreintation $187.50, 4 weeks of training $400/wk and 0 to 6 months .33/cpm, 6 to 9 .36/cpm, 9 to 12 .38/cpm and 1 yr you cap out at .40/cpm. The miles are good if your willing to run hard. Drivers plan their own routes and fuel stops. We dont have GPS. They are great about getting you home. Everyone requires different things in a company. Idk what your looking for but if you have questions just hit me up and ill do my best.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

Yeah I'm with Starcar on the private schooling idea. They definitely would see to it you passed...and you would have had a lot more opportunity for independent decision making regarding your next steps. But Redgator is right; every trucker has their own individual needs and wishes. And you have sooo much ahead of you now...but you'll figure it out quickly now that you're out the door and on your way.

Not to switch gears on this but just wanted to share with you ladies that I accepted the job offer from Knife River last week. I'm watching the training videos this week and trying to comprehend running a ready mix truck. Quite intimidating!! I'll still be a local trucker but this is going to be so different. The upside; after training, 20.60/hr and 30.90/hr o/t after 8! They pay all your dental & vision and give you a work cell phone. I'm sure there's more but already I'm pleased! This company also has dry bulk double sets and double dump sets. So there will be even more to learn in the future if I don't mind moving around to different yards/towns...

Hey Deb...the more you learn the more you are worth !!! So, like it or not...dirty or clean....learn it and own it...it will pay you back someday. I'm glad you are cuttin' a path in the portland area for women in trucking...thats one tough town for women...So keep us updated !!! I hope GlamGirl updates us, since I believe she will be the first woman that I know of going thru Prime training...
