Wow, Monbon.....you must not have seen ALL of Washington and Oregon....Its my stompin' grounds and I like it...And I've been to SC...its not much different...but anyway... There are places that it would be easier for you to go to school, and get in and out of with a truck. I'll break it down so that you will understand what I'm tryin to say. There are places, like Florida, that you can get your cdl thru a school, but you can' find a job, cuz freight coming out of Florida is thin...So no company likes to send their trucks down there, cuz they end up coming back out of there empty. Arizona also has some of that problem, but with a twist. Its hard to find a trucking school in AZ...you usually have to go to CA or UT for school. But if you live close to the interstate (10, 20, or 40) you will find it easy to get a job driving, and you will probably get home on a regular basis. SC isn't that hard either. Most of the big companies run thru there.So you don't have to move, but you may want to go to a trucking school out of the area, in order to get the school and the company that you want to spend your first year with. If you go to the Truckers area on this site, theres info on different companies who will put you thru their school, and if you drive for them for a year, your school is free. Many of them will takes spouse teams too !! I teamed with my hubby for years...its quite different than teaming with a stranger...lol But we are glad to have you on this site. kick back and start reading and learning. CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
- Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
- Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
Interstate:
Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).
A lot of my issue is that I lived in Washington for way too long (personal) I literally live between Charlotte and Columbia on 77.. really close to I-20. I am willing to go to a truck school out of my area and I almost assumed I would have to. I have looked at Knight quite a bit and wondered if any of y'all would have anything to say about them? What kind of things should I expect.. I don't claim to know a whole lot here, I have been around the industry as I have family in trucking however I have only driven a truck maybe once or twice around hayin season (Idaho Native) I have a clean driving record, not so good credit, and no felonies or criminal history.. I am going on 40 this june so I am free to ride the open road and get er done!
TWIC:
Transportation Worker Identification Credential
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
I was thinking...we lived in North Wilkesboro, NC...and were leased to a company out of Lexington NC. They hired alot of drivers from a community college pretty close to them. You may try looking it up and see what they can offer you. atleast you will be going to school closer than another state, and I'm sure they have companies that are scouting for new drivers....God Luck !!
TSB sez the community college is in Greensboro...The name is gillford, or something close to that... Good Luck !!
Sorry for not responding sooner I have been ill. I am here now! I have made my choice with CR England not only because of affordability but local I know there will be a lot of boo's out here but I did not have too many choices close by. The majority of the ones I phoned did not have the ability to take someone from my state.

EEEKKK cant seem to make up my mind, but one of the gals here offered some information to me that I am considering through Quality Drivers Very eager to speak with them tomorrow.

Hello Ladies... I am sure you get this topic a lot! I have been wanting to do this for a long time and now that the kids are gone and life has calmed a lot I am so ready to hit the road.. Yes I know there is so much to learn and I know it wont be easy and that it is all about attitude and making the best of it... I also know that there are going to be good and bad runs... I guess the advice I am looking for most of all is what school to choose? I am having a hard time finding all of the info regarding getting My CDL and working for someone or training.. so far the ones I am looking at are Knight Transport and CSRT not sure if that's a good choice or not.. I Live in South Carolina and hubby and I are willing to relocate wherever needed.. we kind of like the central area like Arizona but not very fond of Washington or Oregon. Thanks for any advice you can give
