Scott B, I don't mind you asking at all; I wanna do long haul and I have an outlook that I can make more money with a hazmat endorsement.. Also from talking with truckers I have, in my experience, been told hazmat is an important 1 of the 7 to get. What is Twic?
HAZMAT:
Hazardous Materials

Transportation Worker Identification Credential
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (or TWIC) program is a Transportation Security Administration and U.S. Coast Guard initiative in the United States. The TWIC program provides a tamper-resistant biometric credential to maritime workers requiring unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities, outer continental shelf facilities, and vessels regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, or MTSA, and all U.S. Coast Guard credentialed merchant mariners. An estimated 750,000 individuals require TWICs. Those seeking unescorted access to secure areas aboard affected vessels, and all Coast Guard credentialed merchant mariners, must obtain a TWIC. The new measures were fully implemented on April 15, 2009.[1] To obtain a TWIC, an individual must provide biographic and biometric information such as fingerprints, sit for a digital photograph and successfully pass a security threat assessment conducted by TSA.
The issued card contains computer chip, known as an Integrated Circuit Chip (ICC), which stores the holders information and biometric data. The chip can be read by inserting it into a reader or holding it near a "contactless" reader. There are also a magnetic strip (similar to a credit card) and a linear barcode on the back as alternative reading methods.[2]

I have a TWIC card and used to use it all the time for the ports in California. Now for what the TWIC card really is.........$132.00 photo id.
Sorry Ken though that is the official statement of what a TWIC card is according to Homeland Security and whoever else you might ask but it only a photo id. Very few places have a biometric chip reader. Only port I had to scan was the APL port in Los Angeles.
All the other ports everyone and I mean everyone rolled by the security officer at 5 to 10 mph and held it up to show we had one. No way they could see the picture or read the expiration date. And they certainly did not scan them at all.

Even trafficking charges are not auto fail for hazmat. The list of the disqualifiers is at hazprints.gov. Sedition, renouncing of citizenship, espionage and such are the big ones. And if you don't mind me asking, why sweat hazmat endorsement so much when trying to start? The majority of starter companies and jobs require only a CDL A. You can be denied Hazmat or Twic and still be eligible for tons of jobs available now.
