At least ten people, including five students, are dead after a FedEx truck crossed a divider on a Northern California freeway and slammed into a bus carrying a group of high school seniors who were on their way to tour a college campus.

According to the AP, the bus was full of a group of Los Angeles-area high school seniors headed to Humboldt State University in Arcata, California for a campus tour.

California Highway Patrol told KTLA that a southbound FedEx truck crossed the center divider and crashed head on into the bus. A Nissan Altima was also involved in the crash.

The vehicles collided on the Interstate 5 around 5:40 pm, sparking a fire that completely engulfed the bus. Authorities say several students were airlifted to area hospitals.

UPDATE 8:01 am: The death toll from the crash now stands at 10, including five students. Three adult chaperones, the driver of the bus, and the driver of the truck were also killed.

I read about this this morning. There was a bad one not too far from where I live the other day. Two people were killed. Killing someone is my biggest fear about becoming a trucker. My heart goes out those who were injured and those who lost love ones.

Truly a sad situation. What is also upsetting are all the troll comments after the story. Everyone surmising what happened and how the truck driver was a dirtbag, etc, etc, etc. True, the truck crossed the median and hit the bus. But WHY did he cross the median? We can only guess until the investigators finish their investigation.

Just read 10 minutes ago that the FedEx driver might have swerved to avoid hitting a car.
