Who did you start with? What was the pay like to start? Did you start out team driving?

It's was done with Wel and she stayed out all the time with hardly any home time.

I did not team. Their pay progression is:

.33/cpm 0 to 6 months
6 to 9 months .36/cpm
9 to 12 months .38/cpm
1 yr .40/cpm.

I ran hard, busted my tail and was rarely home. Like guy said I work for WEL Companies in DePere, WI

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

Does that company take on new unexperienced drivers. I do not see them on the list here. Or did you get your license on your own and they took you on with no experience?

Thanks!

I'm just starting my first trucking job this week. I'm hauling for a hardware company that has their own trucks. One of the reasons I wanted this job was because its close to home with a dedicated run and home every other day, if only for a few hours. And the pay is better than any trucking company pays. I get a good base pay (about $550/week) plus mileage and layover pay (I get paid for the inconvenience of sleeping in the truck). My instructors at CDL school said they would consider quitting their instructor jobs for the deal I got. Most new drivers for this company earn about $42k and are home every day delivering to hardware stores at night. I'll earn more because I long haul to another distribution center.

Don't be afraid to look beyond the usual companies. Check out local companies that serve a big area. Some local (NE PA) companies serve grocery stores and convenience stores in PA and neighboring states and seem to pay better than the big national carriers. Most of these type jobs are 100% touch freight which isn't for everyone but you take the bad with the good. Not all take new drivers but some do.

research, research, research

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dedicated Run:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."
