Why wouldnt she get to drive a semi? If she is in a training program with at least 160 hrs and gets her cdl and company that trains will hire her. Studentplacement.com is a website that sends her app to 30 plus companies at once. She can apply while in school and get prehires. There is a whole section on here with the info about prehires and trucking companies. I am originally from Lafayette?, LA but secured my cdl through PA. If yall need anything just let me know.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Prehire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Floating Gears:

An expression used to describe someone who is shifting gears without using the clutch at all. Drivers are taught to "Double Clutch" or press and release the clutch twice for each gear shift. If you're floating gears it means you're simply shifting without using the clutch at all.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Woman make up 8% of the trucking industry from the last article read and truck companies like seeing woman apply and encourage them to do so. The only problem is there is a shortage of woman trainers to train new drivers, so I have been told and the wait can be a bit when trying to get started. Perseverance and staying in contact with your recruiter. Your sister will do great.

Thank you Jimmy....you can lurk here all you want. And we appreciate your imput !!!

Its a shame about there not being enough women trainers. And I know we have all heard the horror stories about the guy trainers...BUt companies have changed....now alot of them ask the student to RATE the trainer !!! So the worm has turned...the trainer used to have all the power....not so much anymore. And enough companies have been hit with sexual charges that they ALWAYS listen when a lady trainee has a problem. Right now, if I were faced with waiting for an unknown amount of time for a lady trainer, or going with a guy, I'd go with the guy. I'm tough enough that he'd get the hint real fast. Guys are weird...they have never figured out that when women get mad they RAGE...and for every hurt they have ever suffered, they direct it at the person infront of them....silly men. So you can go with a company that will guarantee you a lady trainer....but get a time limit for getting that trainer IN WRITING....that way, if they fail to provide you one, you are free to go to another company, who will put you in a truck with a trainer...And since the original cdl school broke their own contract, you may not have to pay them for the schooling. just an FYI...it happened to a friend of mine.
