Honestly I don't care if people talk about what to do about truck parking but please refrain from blatantly talking about illegal acts. Use a little common sense guys. I don't want people to get the idea that things like this are even remotely supported by this website which I can assure you that Brett does not do.

Deduct it off taxes even when you do get reimbursed. That's a classic case of easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

Not really. That is problematic at best. If your audited not only do you have to pay that money back but you also get a fine in the bargain so that few dollars you were trying to claim quick turns into several hundred.

Just not worth messing with the IRS.

That is true. That is why (This year) I am keeping my receipts. There were a few times I did NOT put in a P.O. request. If I saved my receipt, I would have been good.

If your company will reimburse for parking then you can not deduct it. Only way you can deduct an expense like this if your company specifically states they will not reimburse.

There are certain things I can get reimbursed for (according to my tax preparer) but it would have to exceed the standard deduction (at the FEDERAL level), at the state level I have a bit more room to play with, but it has to be something that I wasn't reimbursed for. Like a wash rack after I hit a deer will NOT be reimbursed. A trailer washout will. If I saved the receipt, I could have deducted it. If you are on paper logs, and had to buy a paper log book, that might be a legitimate deduction.

As with anything, consult a tax attorney, and save your receipts. ALSO, check your pay stubs/notices (if only online) to see if all of your P.O.'s were compensated.

Also remember for things you deduct that seems like normal stuff most companies reimburse for you will need a copy of your companies policy regarding reimbursement just incase you are questioned about the deduction. I know it suck but you have to prove you have the right to deduct it if questioned.

An easy thing is (if on e-log like Qualcomm or Peoplenet) is to get a copy of any Qualcomm message where they state, "We won't pay for that." I wonder if I could deduct a late charge. I still have the receipt, and I never put in a P.O. request to get reimbursed.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.
