Yes. This is correct. You can use the schools address or a similar one while in school ,that is done all the time, but before or after school it has to be the address in your home state.

Agreed guyjax. Thanks for the clarification.

So Peebles, you are saying that you have your permanent Kentucky address on your Indiana permit and that same Kentucky address will go on your Indiana CDL? If so, that differs significantly from what the person at Indiana DMV stated. Go figure!

Anyway, glad to hear things are working out well for you and we are getting the right info out to folks. Keep us updated on your training!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Okay here is what happened with me. I live in ky, and I am in school in Indy. I brought 2 pieces of mail post marked within the last 60 days, birth certificate, ss card, marrage certificate, and ,my ky operators license. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING OR YOU WILL BE SITTING AND WAITING WHILE EVERYONE IS PROGRESSING. My permit and Indiana license has my ky address on it. Crazy I know. Now this is imprortant listen carefully. Some states are not like ky. When i get back to ky with my Cdl's I can simply trainsfer them back, but some states like Illinois will make you take your CDL exam again. thats pretrip, backing, and road skills.

Side Question: Would I also need my divorce papers? Some states require them and some dont because Ive had a name change since birth.

Good Grief !!! the amount of invasion of privacy that agency's demand just gets me. Theres a trucking outfit that calls me every year to drive, and every year I turn em down....why ??? Cuz they do hair folicle testing for drugs. I'm like, the danged federal government doesn't even do that !!! Its the line I've drawn in the sand...I don't do drugs, haven't for alot of years...but if the regular required tests aren't good enough for them, then they can find another butt to warm that truck seat. I can always find a job driving truck with someone who doesn't want my danged hair.

I don't know of any other trucking company but this local one that asks for hair folicle testing...but to me, its just to far over the limit.

CSA just finished a listen session and hair testing for drugs was the main topic concerning drug testing. While some may not like it all the speakers there, companies AND drivers(mostly owner ops) and a few reps from OOIDA were pretty much in agreement that companies can and should do hair testing if that is what they want to do...thing is the reason CSA had this as a topic they were trying to gauge reaction if they were to mandate drug hair testing across industry wide. Sounds like very few people had any objections to this idea.

One reason companies hair test is to see if you are lying. More and more companies are asking if you have used any drugs within the last 90 days and of course the hair test can go up to 90 days back with hair that is an inch to an inch and a half long.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

OOIDA:

Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association

Who They Are

OOIDA is an international trade association representing the interests of independent owner-operators and professional drivers on all issues that affect truckers. The over 150,000 members of OOIDA are men and women in all 50 states and Canada who collectively own and/or operate more than 240,000 individual heavy-duty trucks and small truck fleets.

Their Mission

The mission of OOIDA is to serve owner-operators, small fleets and professional truckers; to work for a business climate where truckers are treated equally and fairly; to promote highway safety and responsibility among all highway users; and to promote a better business climate and efficiency for all truck operators.
