Thanks for the kind words, Gary. I wrote it pretty much exactly as it happened. I was genuinely scared that night and realized the error of my ways as soon as I hit I-79. Whereupon I had been safely parked in a rest area only 30 minutes before, I was suddenly very much in a situation that exceeded both my comfort and skill levels and was simply thankful to have gotten out of it unscathed. That's my biggest point, sort of like the cliché "experience is what you gain when you need it". I learned a valuable lesson not to keep pushing when the good old internal voice says "shut it down". Just a cautionary tale for any new driver faced with a similar set of circumstances...
