Whats up guys. My name is Joseph but yall can call me Joe. Im 21 and thinking about starting my truck driving career. My father started driving back when he was 17 (1967) and quit 2 years ago due to his health. I basically grew up in the truck (ages 2-13). Thats one of the reasons I wanna drive is because i grew up in and around trucking. I have pretty much made my mind up on going with Prime Inc.. I just want to hear from Prime drivers and or others who know about Prime. I am single with no kids therefore im thinking i can make alot of money from Prime. I do not have any work history. I do not have any driving violations or anything like that. Any info on Prime Inc. is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Welcome JC! I will be starting at Prime on the Sept 15th and can tell you why they were my first choice.

1. Top pay- Prime offers the highest starting wage for new drivers, higher than some companies offer after a year of service. 2. Longer length of training- CDL school at Prime is 4 days orientation and simulator work, 28 days 1 on 1 with a trainer, then test for CDL, then 6 to 8 weeks training(30,000 miles) with a trainer- some companies that offer CDL training offer 3 weeks CDL school then 4 weeks training( I received a pre hire letter from CRST after talking to a recruiter for 10 mins). And as long as you drive for Prime a year your out of pocket cost is $150. Prime has a lot tighter standards for hiring so make sure your all squared away. Daniel B and some others on here drive for Prime so they can really tell you what its like.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Pre Hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

So the reason for no work history at age 21? If you were in school then no problem. School transcripts will prove that.

But if it's because you just did not work then there will be a big problem with that. Since you have never driven a truck before you will only need to show/prove what you were doing for the last three years. And "Nothing" is not going to work. Prime will have a big issue with any gaps in work history or no work history unless you were in school.

...or if there's something you've been doing that's verifiable, like, you've been volunteering for the fire department all this time since graduating from high school.

Welcome to Trucking Truth, Joe!

I envy you and HM and all of you who can pick up, leave home, and get the training you need, driving all over. GO for it!

I have no work history because there is not any jobs where i live. Ive applied and applied and applied. i did work at walmart for a week when i was 17 (after i graduated) but had to quit due to having to move back home for family reasons (my grandma and father). ive done under the table work such as remodeling, asphalt sealing, and Disaster clean up. But for the big gap of no work is all because i simply cannot get a job anywhere around here. Im going to call the recruiter later on today and talk to him/her about it.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I wish you luck, however i was not working for several years because i had ill family i was taking care of and Prime would not even let me talk to a recruiter once they saw that. I would not put all your eggs in that one basket.

Hey Joe, you're twenty-one and the whole world is open to you . . . DO NOT be discouraged (that means don't let ANYONE steal your courage - literally) because things come to those who work for them . . . do you have a good work ethic? Do you know what it means to put in a full days work and EARN your reward as opposed to thinking you have an entitlement in life? YES, well if you have a truck driving father than you know what real work is. So, here is my advice as a current new solo driver for Prime, Inc. Call this recruiter, her name is Tabitha Smith and her number is:

800-224-4585 (ex 6658).

... talk to her and if she's not available leave her a message and call her back . . . be persistent. Don't worry about the lack of a work history, you've been doing something with your time and she can help you to document yourself to Prime's standards. She gets paid if she recruits you so she is your advocate in this matter. Be 100% honest and do EVERYTHING she asks you to do . . . and don't get discouraged (see above) . . . Prime is an excellent company to work for and truck driving, well . . . you know all about that from your dad, right? Oh, and one more thing . . . I can't not tell you how important it is to get the Lord Jesus Christ into your life if you have not already done so . . . that's more important than anything else (and I mean ANYTHING) in this life time . . . good luck and fell free to ask me any specific questions you might have about Prime, Inc. - you can send me a personal email by clicking on my photo in the corner and follow the instructions for such thing . . . isn't that a great photo? Sure doesn't look like an old fart, but then photos can be deceiving . . .
