Maybe someone from Florida will have to answer this?? I dunno.

When you go out of Florida for School, what's the process for obtaining a CDL. Does the Company (School) Transfer or help to transfer your License to their State in order to get your CDL in that State? Are there tests one has to take in order to get an out of State Class E license?

When I get back home (FL,) what's the process for getting my license (Class E) and my class-A Cdl switched to Florida? Will I have to test for either, the Class-E or A-Cdl?

I know, whatta a pain!!!

Thank You.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Well, let's start with the easy one: you'll turn in the E license as you can only have one license at a time. In discussions with Swift, when going to the TN academy I'll take my FL permit to training. I'll do a couple weeks of academy then return to FL (probably Ocala) for an additional week of road training and then toad test. Check with your school. I know TX makes you get a TX permit. Normally you want your CDL in the state you reside (domicile). That's the way I kept my license when I was active duty.

I moved to Florida in 2013 with an Illinois cdl. All I had to do was surrender my Illinois license and pay the $85.00 to transfer to Florida. No tests. However there are certain States that Florida won't accept and will make you take the written for Florida. Call the 800 number for Florida dmv and sit on hold for 20 mins and verify what state you're getting your cdl.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
