I posted earlier but cannot find it now. Sorry for the repost. I live in MS and considering going through a trucking company or private school to receive my CDL. Please give me your recommendations. Thanks in advance. Looking to be team driver with husband as soon as possible. Maybe middle of next year.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hey Miranda,

Check out our list of Company-Sponsored Training schools. There's a ton of info there for many different schools. Should help you narrow your search out..

I've been through swifts training in Phoenix, and was employed for 11months with them. They are a good company to start out with for your first yr, after that its up to you if you want to stay or find something better.

If you and your spouse plan to school at the same time, just so you know, you two will be doing training separate after CDL school. If he's planning to wait tell after you go through, you may be able to train him after he gets out of CDL school, but you'll probably need to have some experience under your belt for that.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

I seen that too. Thanks for the heads up. Just thought I could help her out if she could tell me what part of the state she lived in.

Your other post is in the cdl training diaries section, was wondering why you didn't reply back to me there but no biggie. Use Davids advice and also use the search feature here to find more info about specific companies, and also call them and ask them about anything you cant find here or get an answer to by posting. You will find a ton of helpful and truthful information here!

Miranda, I'm an instructor and Mississippi Highway Patrol Third Party Examiner. I'm familiar with most other instructors in your geographic area and wanted to help. Holmes Community College will soon open a location in Grenada....Been told sometime in January.

Hope this helps. Keith
