So I am currently four weeks into a four month program at HDS in Tucson AZ. I want to take my wife with me OTR doing team driving. But because of money we have to go to two different schools. My wife works while I am going to school. But we both feel that we need to get over the road as fast as possible to start making money. We both agreed to go to Covenant and we do have pre hires there. The problem is do I have my wife get her CDL in four weeks and go ahead of me? Which worries me about her being by herself. Or have her wait so that we can go out together at the same time? Also, money is ultra tight and I worry because I have a 15 year old felony. In closing thank you for any advice.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Pre Hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Hi and welcome to trucking truth..... Let's start by saying even if you both get your cdl at the same time and start at the same time you both will go out with a trainer for x amount of days without each other and then upgrade to whatever it is your doing weather its team or solo... With that said if she can get her cdl before you and start with said company and go solo while waiting for you to be able to jump on her truck as a team might be the best way to go.. I would do it this way if I was in your shoes...... Now I'm not sure of the felony but sounds like you don't have to worry about it because you already have a pre hire and I'm sure you already told the company about it

Thank you Scott for the advice.i Know your right about my wife going over the road first, I just worry about all the things that could go wrong for her with out me. She said she is ready to go and excited.as for myself I can't wait to make some real money and see our beautiful country. The kids are out of the house so we have no problem being out 2 or 3 months at a time. That's our goal anyway. God bless and thank you again

I said for her to go first because you are already in a school that still has a while Before you get your cdl and from what u said she could get her cdl before you... If that's the case then she should start the process first and tell the company that she wants to team with you as soon as you get your cdl now by the time you get your cdl she should be in her own truck waiting for you to get done training

I tend to lean towards letting her go ahead. Think of the confidence she'll have! Also, companies will certainly help getting a ready made team together!

Johnny, the one person who can give you a difinative answer to your question is the recruiter. I assume you told he/she about the felony (if not you have made a big error) and so talk to that person with any and all concerns you might have. They do tend to paint rosy pictures to get you to come to their company but they won't tell you something like a felony is "OK" if it isn't . . . they only get paid for your placement if you get accepted . . . as far as your wife not having you around, you are going to find out more about her capabilities when she passes her training on her own (with your rooting for her of course) and I'm sure a new-found respect for her accomplishments . . . the experience will probably make your marriage stronger as you discover new aspects of her character that trucking will bring out. God luck,

Jopa

Wow jopa! The felony thing is something that has weighted heavy on my mind. The recruiter at covenant told me my felony won't be a problem.i wasn't sure if I was getting a bunch B.S but its nice to know they won't waste their time doing that.

I think it's better if you get your CDL before your wife. Once you are trained, she can come on board and you can mentor her. Especially since she has a job, she can do that while you learn the ropes. Once you start making money, it'll make sense for her to quit her job and join you. Just my opinion.
