Greetings and salutations drivers! After being away for a couple years I've found my way back to Brett's site. Hope all are well. A quick bio - Got my CDL A in January 2011. Been around the business most of my life but never drove. Went to work with KLLM pulling reefer. After a year and a half a local friend offered me a job pulling reefer on a dedicated run from N Georgia to Detroit and back. Also pulled flatbed for him hauling poultry equipment all over the US and Canada. Recently got an offer to pull tanker in the SE (GA, TN, SC, ALA) for more $$$. Started that job Dec 1. So far so good. Be glad to answer any questions if I can. Also want to say a HUGE THANKS to Brett, Mike, guyjax, and all who helped me so much when I got started. Listen to these folks, drivers and you will have a leg up in your career. BTW Brett, I've never gotten back to that beautiful area but if I do I'll buy you the steak. :) Be safe all! Eddie

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dedicated Run:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."

Reefer:

A refrigerated trailer.
