"Definition of a TWIC Card: An important part of working in the transportation sector, especially today, is security clearances. If you work in a place that is regulated by the Maritime Transportation Security Act, you may need a TWIC card to perform your duties. Before you apply for one, you should find out exactly what the TWIC card is.
"What it Is: TWIC stands for Transportation Worker Identification Credential. Your TWIC is an identification credential featuring your fingerprints. Your TWIC card acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the neccesary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
"History" TWIC cards were made mandatory for certain individuals upon the passing of the Maritime Transportation Security Act in 2002. The Maritime Transportation Security Act was passed to increase the security of the United State's ports. The bill was made law in November of 2002.
