Considering OTR, Concerned If My Past Will Be An Issue

I am considering a career in OTR one year from now due to a DUI from 4 years ago because from what I have read here I'm out of luck until the 5 year mark. That aside I also have the following charges: A reckless driving charge from 2006 , a public intoxication charge(walking home from bar) which would be close to 5 years ago at the time I would seek employment and a suspended license that happened earlier this year. This suspension wasn't a moving violation but a lapse in keeping a sr-22 with the department(didn't think I had to after 3 years).

I'm 37 years old and have never been in an accident with another driver where I was at fault. As an adult I've only had one speeding ticket (37 in a 30) and that's been nearly 10 years ago.

Another concern I have is that if based on a 10 year job history I have owned a small retail and service business for the past 5 years and for 2-3 out of the previous 5 before that I did courier work as an independent contractor for one company and sat out and helped family for a couple years in between that employment and starting my current business. What I'm getting at is that I haven't been an employee since 2005 where I worked for 4 years as a valet at a hotel. I do plan to find some employment in the 6 months before I start the CDL and trucking school process. I also have a bachelors degree in Psychology so does that add any extra weight against past issues in the hiring process?

I'm considering ending my business at the end of the year because I've lost the passion for it, am burned out and am tired of being confined to it and the idea of leaving it all behind and hitting the road is very appealing to me.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

DUI:

Driving Under the Influence

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated
