Okay so I have a bit of a problem. I went to a community college driving school, and got my CDL A. I thought I was golden but once I started applying for jobs I realized that everyone wants work history. The problem is, I've been a full time student since I graduated from high school, and don't have a real work history. Am I screwed?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Absolutely not. Just be able to show your transcripts proving your full time student status. They simply need to verify you weren't at some weird terrorist training camp and you need to be able to provide proof of your whereabouts and activities.

Brandon, what? You don't have a Job Experience tree growing in your back yard?? That's the mistake!

You say you haven't worked, or gotten a paycheck because you were in school. Were you in band or on a team? Bring up your extracurricular activities, if you have any.

95% of job applicants have worked before, so that's what the company expects. In your case, that's a blank page. But often your company can work with any experience of yours that gave you real responsibility.

Collect letters from teachers, coaches, and your guidance counselor. Scouts? Things like that.

Plan C: join the military, or National Guard, get your driver training, experience and other benefits.
