To anyone that will answer...I have always wanted to drive a truck. Most of my family drives..even my 51 year old sister. I am 41 with three grown children..my youngest daughter is in the army and and she drives those big trucks that launch patriot missles. I figured if her little butt can do it..so could I. I worked at a male maximum security prison for 20 years as a guard working in the high aggressive cellhouses and I am tired of the stress. My sister..the trucker has told me all kinds of bad things. The guy I'm living with has also been a trucker for years. I told him what I wanted to do and he wants me to do the factory thing..that doesn't pay worth anything. I've never been so indecisive in my life. I figured my kids are grown now so what is stopping me while I'm still young. I put in an application at Prime in Springfield, Mo. Anyone know anything about Prime and how they are? I was told you will "starve" the first few years..but heck, I'm starving now at a factory. Not what I want to do. It seems all you hear is the bad things..I believe it's what you make of it! Someone please give some encouragement if you can!!! lol

I just passed my general knowledge, air brakes, and combinations tests yesterday to get my commercial permit! I don't think it is possible to be more of a newbie than I am! lol Next Tuesday I'm going back to DMV to get my tanker, doubles/triples, and hazmat endorsements added. I am also curious about which are the best companies for a new CDL student to go for? I want to be a company driver for at least a year before I consider anything else. I am also open to driving as a team, though I don't currently know anyone who I would be willing to live 24/7 with in a box. smile.gif I spent last year in chemo and radiation for breast cancer, which wiped me out financially. I need to get a really good driving job. Any and all information is greatly appreciated!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

I think I'd still rather risk impound/jail than being pulled over by a fake cop and getting murdered on the side of the road. I'll call 911 and ask for the local station's number. But if all else fails, I will wait till I'm in a lighted area with other people around to pull over.

I have a question for everyone. I am interested in truck driving, but before I try to invest in this new career, I would like for everyone to be honest about the good, the bad, and the ugly about driving trucks. I am a former teacher and I found out that it was not for me. I even tried to go into nursing, but it had its own politics and all it did was drain my bank account and I have nothing to show for that investment. I've always liked to drive and take long trips, so being away from people would not be a problem for me. In fact, it would be something that fits me. I'm not antisocial, but when it comes to doing a job, I don't see myself socializing too much and would prefer to keep being social to a minimum. I heard that going back to school for this would cost too much money and has its own issues, but I would like to talk to people who are already in this field to tell me, if you were talking to someone, like me, who was interested, what would you tell them? I'm not asking for an easy career nor a hard one either. Also, with the CDL test, is it very hard? I looked at some practice test questions and I didn't do too bad on them considering I had no training and based my answers on what I've seen other truck drivers to while on the road. I am not here to offend anyone, but I really do need to know these things because I cannot afford to invest into something else only to repeat it in failure. :(

i have been out on the road driving for going on 40 years. I tried to retire from driving truck. I live in a very small town. With no job offerings that pay me for my potential.Driving truck, i raised my 3 kids without child support help from their dads, my 'children grew up and turn out just fine. And i train my son to drive. He is a good driver. I. Love my son. And my m/ daughters and my grandchildren. I bought me land and its paid for. I live in the wilderness in Nevada. And quite happy. In fact its a good place to get peace away from t;e hustle and bustle of lots of peop)e out here. Its a different lifestyle out here and doesnt make do for women out here as easy as anyone thinks.
