That's one of the beauties of trucking - you can live pretty much anywhere and still make a great living.

Should be no problem finding a job if he left CRST. Jones Brothers and Watkins Shepherd are both based out of Missoula and there are many smaller carriers within say 100 miles of Anaconda.

Not real familiar but I know it is cheap. Saw a 1 bed 1 bath with a VERY small lot listed at like 65k or 8 acres on a creek for 69,900 but no house. Just don't try and change things like those moving from California are doing. If you don't like dirt roads then Montana is not for you... LOL I am actually not that far from there in Helena. I know of a guy selling land around Garrison Junction a few miles up the road.

This is a valid point.. however outside of OTR trucking there really is not a whole lot. That's including local CDL jobs. Butte Montana and the area around it is a dieing town. So if you ever want to eventually get off the road you will have a very hard time finding a job.

But to answer your question Anaconda is pretty dang cheap. I can't really remember how much open land will cost.. but I know like 60% of the houses in town are empty and you can buy one for VERY cheap. Ever since the cooper mine out there shut down its been going down hill. The state mental hospital is also in Anaconda.. you know in case you have a mental breakdown. Hahahhaha

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Max, you are looking at it all wrong. There are actually many local driving jobs. I know of several openings in Butte and that is not that far away. This is for one trucking company. All the local trucking companies seem to pay by the hour. We also have Old Dominion, Midwest Motor Express, ABF and North Park Transportation for P&D and line haul jobs.

There are many jobs in the surrounding areas just not in Anaconda itself.

P&D:

Pickup & Delivery

Local drivers that stay around their area, usually within 100 mile radius of a terminal, picking up and delivering loads.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers for instance will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

Line Haul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.
