Hello all, just wondering how does cross border trucking works specifically to/from Canada? And what companies do it?
I'm sure there are many companies that do it, and it is actually quite common. You need a passport just like any other traveler, and there are some special procedures for clearing the load and paperwork through customs. I'm not too familiar with that side of it. All I know is that you show up at the border with the proper documentation (there's something called a PARS sticker and a PAPS sticker which should be on the paperwork to or from Canada, respectively), show your passport, possibly go through an inspection, and then you're on your way. I believe the stickers have something to do with pre-clearance of the load to expedite the process, but again not sure.
Years ago, we'd just pull up to the border patrol booth, hand them our iD and the BOL for the load, sometimes they'd want to see the registration for the truck, but would usually just wave us on through since we were "frequent flyers" at that particular crossing. I'd bet now its very similar but you have to show your passport too. Every great now and then, they'd decide they wanted to inspect yoir truck and would have you step out of the truck while they searched through the cab and sleeper looking for prohibited items.
it was always more of a pain getting back in to the US then it was to leave. Mexico was the same way. They'd just make sure you didn't look Hispanic and wave us on through.
