I'm relatively new CDL holder drive for swift. While checking other opportunities some companies said they don't hire from CA when I say I'm planning to live on the road they say they looking at the state where the CDL is from. Is this the case with many companies?

I was thinking changing my home address to TN to save on state taxes Is there good opportunities in TN?

Does any one now what the exact process is there any test physical requirements?

Thank You.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Every states process will be different, but I doubt a physical will be necessary. For Arizona it was only 25$, birth certificate and ss card. No proof of residency. WA state was 195$ or so to transfer. As far as taxes ND what not go I couldn't tell ya. Trust me you will want "home time" even if you don't go home exactly. A break from the truck is very nice

Yes that's pretty common. Most companies have a certain hiring area and they'll go by the state your license is in to determine if you qualify.

I'll say this - I wouldn't worry about changing states for income tax purposes as a truck driver. The difference isn't enough to worry about. If you just signed a $3 million dollar a year contract with the NFL then I'd say that would be really important. But by the time you deduct your expenses from living on the road you won't have all that much state income tax to pay. Not enough to change your residency.
