Thanks to the "High Road Training program" offered on this site I was able to pass my Permit tests this morning with flying colors. Air Brakes- 100% Combination- 100% General Knowledge -98% So with that I give a great big thank you to those that put it all together. I feel it would have been a ton more difficult without the training program. My next step is to meet with the folks from Trans Tech on Thursday to get signed up for their school, and most awesomely my uncle who is a Owner Op said now that I have my permit, he will help me till I get into school so I can get practice with pre trip, shifting and backing! With that I will say thank you again and I will keep you posted of my progress!
That's great, Jim! Permit? Check! School? Check! Extra practice with Uncle? Extra Check!
Road experience is a good thing. But the skills most students have trouble with are Pre-trip and backing. You certainly will get practice at school, but if you can get the hang of these now, so much the better.
Do you have a company in mind?
No, I know I should be looking for prehires but I've been focusing on getting school and my permit squared away.
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.
