Zach, start reading. Every question you ask is all on the high road training program or in your states cdl manual.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

It all depends on whether or not you have your foot on the brake...

3psi in a minute or less for non combination vehicle , 4 psi or less loss on combination vehicle.

Combination Vehicle:

A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.

Think 2 - 3 - 3 - 4

Straight truck, no brakes applied 2 psi in 1 minute combination, no brakes applied 3 psi in 1 minute

Straight truck, 90 psi brakes applied, 3 psi in 1 minute combination, 90 psi brakes applied, 4 psi in 1 minute

The way our instructor in school broke that down made it easy for me to remember.

In tennessee it's 3 psi with foot off the brake, and 4 psi with foot on the brake after initial air loss, consult your instructor or state manual
