My husband told me that no matter when or how I tell my mom, she won't be happy if I start driving a truck, much less going OTR.

Over The Road
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
Angela, welcome to Trucking Truth and to trucking as a way of life. (That's an interesting date you have : October 1926th, but it looks like mid-October anyway.
Yes truckers as a group do end up with a bad rap. You can disprove that yourself and for your mom. All the ones I've met (OK ... nearly all the ones) are pretty decent people. And there are lots of lady truckers, too.
You do not indicate this: have you studied for and gotten your CDL permit yet? Even if yuor school says they will take care of it, get your Florida one anyway. Be sure to work through the High Road Training Program. You've read some stuff. Have you seen the Truck Driver's Career Guide? Also here's some suggestions of Items To Pack for your school.

CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
- Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
- Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
I haven't gone for my permit yet but I got great info on it from the administrator during registration today. I plan to start studying for it and clear the tests ahead of time.
I don't know why the date came out that way but I couldn't figure out how to change it (doh). It's the nineteenth. ( Just figured out my phone is auto correcting with random dates every time I do)

I've been studying this site and others for weeks now. I read The Raw Truth a few weeks ago and The Adventures of Daniel B. in its entirety yesterday and I just registered for class today!
I start October 1926th and I'm so excited! Unfortunately, my Mom's not happy about it at all but I am hoping she will come around.
