It saves on paper by being electronic, plus it forces a driver to at least open the hood and go through the motions somewhat. I do a pretty extensive pre trip every day and even when at Knight, I didn't mind the Zonar even though my inspection is more thorough. The other helpful thing is that since it's electronic, it allows the log auditor and safety manager to see if it's being done.
I think the Zonar has the quality of being as thorough about the PTI as it should be without its use. In that respect, I think it's a great tool for both the new, ambitious drivers and the somewhat "seasoned" veteran drivers.
Does anyone know if the Zonar is linked to the time-keeping sections of the Qualcom? If so, that could turn a 15 minute PTI without the Zonar into a 45 minute PTI with it, right?
Zonar is a stand alone system. It works similar to the Qualcomm but is a new system designed as a replacement. It does all the same things but on a tablet without a keyboard, it still had quirks and Knight is the only fleet I know of that's switching to it entirely at the moment. They're working to make it more enticing as a Qualcomm replacement down the road industry wide, needless to say, Knight is invested in it financially.
I think that's a pretty nifty system right there... but then again I'm all for new technology.
The question being, could a driver do a pre trip beforehand like this guy did, then just go through the electronic screens and mark them as complete, or would the company get mad if it saw the zonar showing a pretrip done in 10-15 min. some can do a pre trip in 10-15 min but not while also going through zonar's prompts and taking pics and stuff.
For a new driver this could be very useful, for an experienced one... it could still be useful, just not in the drivers eyes. the driver will see it as taking up time but the company will be able to see that he's actually doing a pre trip (to a certain degree, could still just scan each one... wait a couple minutes then move onto the next and so fourth... without actually checking everything) making sure that their equipment is actually safe.
I'm not an experienced driver, but as a student, soon to be rookie I would be all for it, but that's just me.
