Hello All,

I've been here for about an hour or so reading some posts and i figured i would ask for some advice. I will start by introducing myself and giving some background. My name is Danny, I'm 27 years old, well educated and have a clean driving record. I've driven a 14' u-Haul truck with a trailer a couple times while moving from Michigan to Kentucky, with ease and confidence (Not trying to sound like a badass).

I've considered truck driving before but i've always been hesitant because of all the struggles that come along with that career path, however, things are changing now and family is growing and I am thinking ahead and that is why i am once again considering this career path.

So with all honesty, here is the deal, I don't want to dive for long and I want to own trucks and make money with someone else driving them for me. By "Owning Trucks" I mean 2 or 3 trucks, 18 wheelers or straight "Box" Trucks or even Cargo Vans.

I guess what i am asking here is if that is possible and what direction should i head for? I have two brothers that can help me with this, so this in reality would be a family business. Do i need CDL for Small Straight trucks? And what is the money like as O/O ?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Much Thanks!

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I'm sure some more experience drivers will chime in here, but the general consenus on this forum is that it is a bad idea to own your own trucks just coming into the industry. The profit margins for trucking are razor thin, I think I've been told 3% profit. Not to mention, you are completely new to the industry and don't have any notable driving experience.

I'm not trying to just shoot you down, but it is not something that I would recomment doing.

Welcome Danny. A good place to start is to read Brett's Book and review Truck Driver's Career Guide.

"Old School" one of our experienced moderators ran and owned a company that had many trucks. Hopefully he will check-in and offer you some practical and relevant advice.
