Is there an app or a spread sheet to help plan a trip and get better ETAs so i can fig out when i can be someone faster
I always go by the rule of planning my trip at 50 MPH. That gives you a little bit of cushion of time in case of delays.
So as an example, you have a trip going from my home in Chesapeake Va to Springfield MO (that is what I will be doing this weekend). Total miles from my home to Prime headquarters is 1131 using I-64 to St Louis, I-44 from St Louis to Prime. Another route is to go I-64, I-81, I-40 to Nashville. I-24 from Nashville to Paducah KY, then cut across country to I-57 that turns into US-60 straight into Springfield. Then up US-65 to Prime. That route is 1140 miles.
Figuring at 50 MPH that would be 22.62 hours using I-64, or 22.8 hours using I-40 route. Figuring in required 10 hour break time, fueling, 30 minute breaks etc you would need about 3 days to do that. Now the fact that you more than likely will be traveling faster than 50 MPH, you can cut that time down some. So when someone asks you to give them an ETA, and you figure it at 50 MPH and you get there sooner, you look like a hero (think Scotty in Startrek)
But to get back to your question, I don't know of any spreadsheet or app that will help with that. Now I will tell you I use a GPS and google maps quite often to help with my trip planning. That seems to work well for me. Just realize that when using Google maps, the times they give are relative to posted speed limits and traveling in a 4 wheeler.
