Past Medication And Medical Card

So when getting my original physical to even be able to go to trucking school, the doctor asked me about past medical issues or something. I said I had been treated for depression in the past, but hadn't received treatment or medication in 6 years. I didn't know he'd actually write this on my long form. It pretty much says just that, that I was treated for depression until 2010.

Do you think this will be a problem when I go to a carrier orientation? Do you think they'll demand paperwork stating that I'm currently not on medication? Or any other issue?

I have not experienced this firsthand, so just consider that when reading my answer...the information below is hearsay, stuff that I have discussed with other drivers.

I don't see that this should be an issue. Companies that look to hire you are not looking at your long form, they only want to know that you have a current medical card. If you passed your physical and got the full 2-year card you should be fine. If they ask if you are currently taking medication, you can honestly say "No". Don't be dishonest EVER, but you also don't need to provide unrequested information. I don't think I have ever heard of a driver being asked "have you ever in your life taken medication?" or something of the like.

Blue Hotel, assuming you are attending a private school; your future employer will require you to go through another DOT physical as part of their orientation. Considering the aforementioned diagnosis and treatment is over 6 years old, I highly doubt it will cause an issue. Just to be safe, be prepared to answer specific questions and if you have it, take any supporting documentation from your personal physician.

Good luck.

Can you just not mention your history of depression if you are not currently being medicated for the condition? I am in a similar spot but am still taking medication.

I wouldn't have mentioned it to begin with had I known the doctor was going to write a paragraph about me on the long form. I thought he was just going to check off a few boxes. If the company doctor has nothing to say about my current long form, I won't mention it when he is examining me for the new one.

Sorry I had to come back to this thread. Joseph B said companies that are interested in hiring/interviewing me aren't going to look at my long-form. Though they generally request those documents for pre-hires. When I get into orientation and the actual company doctor examines me, do they look at my current medical card and long form? Have they been told anything about me by the company other than my name? What has been you all's experience?

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Would it be possible to just get a new medical card and long form? I cannot provide a note from former psychologist because the last time I saw him was 6 years ago and they don't really remember me a the facilities. I don't have insurance, I don't have a primary care physician. I don't see anyone currently. So if they demand proof that I'm not crazy or suicidal, I'm screwed. I don't have another line of work I can just go back into. I came to CDL school so I could be employable and support myself.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

What we have to go though another DOT Physical? I had a hard enough time to get my first DOT Physical 3 weeks ago. I'm diagnosis with Major Depression Disorder and I had to be monitor for 2 months seeing how I react to my medication before getting approved. I had to delay trucking school by 2 months because of that. I'm still taking meds and I feel okay and safe to drive a semi. Oh geesh. Well, I guess I will cross that bridge when I cross that bridge.
