Well starting my orientation on the fourteenth. I decided to go with Melton. I am excited sorta, just not wanting to live with another person. For 2 weeks in a box. I am a VERY private person and I love my seclusion. But it is the nature of the beast I guess. I was wondering what should I have on my first day of solo? Atlas, cell phone charger, clothes, blow up doll, the important things. What else should I plan on taking?

Here is a helpful list:

Items To Bring To CDL School, Training, and OTR

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Congratulations! Melton is extremely selective, and you are fortunate to have landed with such a good company. Can you stand on one foot for 30 seconds and, then, switch to stand on the other for an additional 30 seconds? I couldn't... But, that's not the only part of the physical. You will need to use PROPER lifting techniques for the "tarp, chain, binder, and strap" tests. Good luck to you on all the tests!!!

Jeremy then asked:

I was wondering what should I have on my first day of solo?

During the initial two weeks with your trainer, I am confident that you will notice what you should have when you go solo afterwards. If that fails, the link that Anchorman provided is a great resource. I used it to select what I needed to take when I go solo, but I was equally concerned about the items I should take when I am in the trainer's truck. For that, I am sure that any of the recruiters at Melton will help you. Try calling and asking your recruiter, because the "luggage" you take with you may vary from one trainer to another.

Good luck, Jeremy. Stay Safe!!!

I have been practicing some of the physical tests that the recruiter mentioned. It does sound easy, but it is harder than it sounds. I have to lift heavy things all the time with my current jobs, most of them being 100 lbs of more. So I think I will be ok. We will see.
