OS&D Fun

Well, I had another fun two days with OSD after a solid 2000 mile run.

Ran into a Target DC. They rejected a single pallet of blueberries, but took the rest of the load.

They rejected the berries at 5:30 PM EST, and the Stevens OSD team was gone for the day.

My preplan was yanked. Grr, but can't complain. I couldn't do anything till the AM.

Went to Petro and got there with 11 minutes on my 14, and 5 on my drive time.

Took lots of pictures of bills, product, etc. for OSD.

Shower, sleep, wake up, get with tire shop and have them start looking at my RFI drive wheel, which has a slow leak.

Check with truck wash next door. They will dispose of a pallet of berries for $10.

OSD tells me I need to deliver to a receiver 162 miles away. OK.

Called shipper. They cannot take load until 0300 next day unless I pay an extra $40 for an on-call forklift operator. They have onsite parking.

Tire valve stem is the problem. Fixed.

Roll to shipper. Arrive @ 1700. Look at preplan. Load to Houston.

PTI, crawl in the bunk.

At 0200, wake and find QC message from 1900. "Shipper will not pay mileage. Says dispose of or donate OSD product."

** This is where I got suspicious. **

I almost asked the OSD receiver to just take the stuff off my truck, but realized that I might be falling into a setup.

The receiver knew I was coming. They knew I was going to overnight. They knew early enough that they could confirm to the shipper that I had arrived before end of business California time.

I was almost certain that the shipper waited until the receiver confirmed that I arrived before telling Stevens that they would not pay for shipping of the OSD to the second receiver.

So I offered to sell the pallet of berries to the secondary receiver since they were mine to dispose of however I see fit. The secondary receiver just offered to get rid of it for me, and were not willing to pay a dime. The berries were in good condition, mostly. Just a bit too ripe for the first receiver. 24% refusal.

I needed to wash out the trailer anyway, so I went back to my truck, looked at my preplan, looked at route, used Truckerpath to find a washout on the way, and rolled to that washout after calling them to be sure they would dispose of a pallet of blueberries.

As I rolled out, I saw the guy that refused to buy the berries staring at my truck. Find another sucker.

No, I am not going to be suckered into delivering product for free. Not even if Stevens is willing to foot the bill for my miles because I had QC messages telling me to roll. If Stevens had said 'give to secondary receiver' or some such, I would have. But they didn't.

Many Mothers and Grandmothers were provided with blueberries for cobblers and pies that day by truck wash employees. 96 flats, 12 x 6oz clamshells per flat. I kept three flats for myself and have been eating two clamshells after every meal.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Brett, if you read this, can you edit the title to OS&D instead of OD&D?

Thanks, if it's possible.

Blueberries are expensive, surprised they didn't find someone else to take.

The only big rejection I've ever had was a pallet of lettuce. I was parking at a diner that night and told the night manager I was fixing to drop a bunch of cases of lettuce at his dumpster, there was nothing wrong with the product just the cases were a little beat up. He gave us a free meal, I bet they had a salad special for a month after that.

I did score some free ice cream off a rejected load at a truck stop the other day. Driver was just handing them out. Quite delicious.
